anyone do geocaching?

DS and DH love to find trails and hike and I thought maybe it would be a nice gift, the handheld GPS to use for the holidays, something they can do together. I have no idea what is required to use! Do you just need the gps, other tools? Any recs on an inexpensive gps??  Any help for this newbie is appreciated! thanks!!

Re: anyone do geocaching?

  • Yes, we do!  DH and I did it a lot before we had the kids, and we've started getting back into it again now that DD is old enough.  My kids love it.  DH likes Garmin e-trex.  There are several models in different price ranges.  I think you can get something good for about $100 but probably not much less than that.  No other tools are needed - just the GPS out in the field and access to the internet before you head out to get the coordinates.  There is a forum on the website for GPS info that might be helpful for picking out a specific unit:  https://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?s=f82bc46d8d1e168ef2dd010456b48d41&showforum=11

  • We do, we have apps on our phones.  They show you all of the caches in the area, hints and photos if you need them, and you can check in right there.  The kids love helping us "treasure hunt" and they always bring little trinkets to swap for something out of the box.

  • Just wanted to say its a great idea!  DH and I used to do it all the time and when our kids get a little older, we will do it more.  Fun!
