We have a Britax Advocate and DS who is 18m is still rear facing. Everything I've read suggests keeping them rear facing as long as possible, which has been been my goal until at least 2. However, he hates going in his carseat, DH hates putting him in it cause he fights it, DH says it's awkward for him to put him in at that angle, DH says he looks uncomfortable, etc. Basically, DH wants the carseat forward facing but is only keeping it rear facing because I'm insistent right now. I gave in momentarily this weekend and told him we could forward face and then I ran inside and did more research and told him to put it back.
So, when did everyone else forward face and where in the car do you put the carseat if you only have one? Does it still go in the middle or behind the driver?
Re: Turning the carseat forward facing
We have a minivan, so she's in the middle row but to the side.
We went FF before 2 years, because DD would get horribly car sick, as in vomit every trip. No doubt, I was a bad driver worring about her crying and puking back there, so flipping for us was the right choice.
If he hates his car seat so much every trip dissolves in to crying, and a stressed out mom or dad behind the wheel, that can't be very safe for you as a driver, so I think sometimes you have to do what you have to do.
The carseat I got was before they changed the required rear facing to 2 years old. It is a Britax and the design was so tight to the back of the seat that Dillon needed to sit with his legs all bunched up. I did try to keep him rare facing as long as possible, but he was never comfortable in my car. He did fine in my H's car (different brand carseat) but not mine. I ended up switching a couple months ago. He has much more room now and isn't screaming the entire ride any more - much more enjoyable for both of us.
*This topic tends to bring up a heated debate - but I know many others who turn the seat around before 2 for many different reasons. You need to do what you are comfortable with based on your situation.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

DS has been FF since he was about 19 mos/ reached the weight requirement. I wanted to wait until 2 but DS cried violently (to the point of vomitting) if we traveled more than 20 minutes so it just wasn't worth it.
ETA: We tried many things before turning him including distractions, cheerios or other disolveable food, and deep pressure before a trip (recommended by an OT friend). The screaming started at 3 months so I would say it was more than just a phase. Some kids just hate the carseat and not being able to move, they would likely fight going in no matter how you face the seat.

Well, we can't have a carseat in the middle (can't get a secure install), so RF, Anna is behind the passenger seat.
and I'm thinking there is a decent chance we'll have to FF her before 2 years (much to my dismay). she doesn't mind it, but when we have to add the infant seat to the car in the next month, we'll have to move her behind the driver's seat. And if she is RFing in that position, my DH likely won't have proper/safe leg room to drive the car. Putting the infant seat behind the driver would be worse, because it is even longer/sticks out further than the RFing convertible seat. We'll try her RFing behind the driver, but if DH doesn't have enough room to drive, then we'll have to flip her (we only have one car).
If we had another option, I'd keep her RFing until 2. But I think everyone has to do the best they can!
Because we're fancy like that.
We have Britax Marathons. I have a yukon XL. DD RF until 19 months, then her brothers were born and we couldn't configure 2 RF infant seats and a RF convertible in a safe, manageable way for me.
She is on the passenger far back row.
We will keep our twins RF until 18 months, then reevaluate.
DD1 was forward faced at 13 months. This was before the official recommendation. I wanted to leave her RF longer but DH an MIL (caregiver) FF her and she would throw a fit in my car.
DD2 was RF until 20.5 months when she hit 20 lbs. she screamed constantly in the car and I was too distracted.
K is still RFing and will be until she no longer meets the safety requirements for RFing in that seat (height vs weight since she's a peanut).
Everyone has to do what works for them, but I'm pro-RFing as long as possible.
We still have Elizabeth RFing, but we've been lucky so far because she rarely complains!
One thing that helped make it less awkward in my car (where her seat is in the center) is that probably around 18-20 months or so, she started climbing into her seat by herself. I lift her into the car and she'll climb into her seat. We make it her job. Then I just have to lean in and buckle her. Makes it a little easier!
They arrived at 36 weeks after PTL and bedrest for 14 weeks.
