C-sections

Planned C-Section

At an ultrasound yesterday, we founnd out baby girl is weighing in at 8lbs 14 oz at 38w6d.  OB came in and basically said we have two options -- schedule a planned C-section for Thanksgiving day or wait until our originally scheduled induction on the 29th and "see how things go."  She said I'm right on the edge for growth one way or the other, so she'd be okay either way.

After some careful consideration I've decided on the scheduled C-Section.  I don't want to end up being whisked in due to fetal distress or complications and I also don't want a vaginal delivery that splits me open in all kinds of wrong ways. . .

Excited and nervous in waiting (:  Anxious to meet my little butterball!

  • ultrasound weights are not all that accurate, but, i agree with your thinking and would have elected the section if in your shoes.

    good luck to you!!

I agree. I had late 3rd tri u/s with both  my boys. Both were way off.  Two days before DS1 was born, I was told he was right at 8lbs. He was 5lbs 12oz.  DS2's growth u/s at 36 weeks said he wasl 6lbs 1oz.  He was born 4 weeks later at 6lbs 5oz.

That being said, you need to do what you feel is best.  GL!

My last u/s said that Lucas was a little over 8lbs. He was 7lbs exactly

  • My 41 week u/s was right on the money-- she seriously measured LO at exactly what he weighed when he was born the next day.

I followed medical advice and had a scheduled c-section-- sometimes I'm mad that I didn't let my body try to deliver but I know I would have regretted it if something had gone wrong.

    GL with your section!

  • a decision like this is never cut and dry but you have to make do with the information presented to you and choose what you feel is right. Everyone knows the u/s are an estimate (I had 4 in my last week of pregnancy and each weight was different - going down in weight each time, obviously not how it works) but there isn't a better tool to determine size.

    GL to you this week!!

  • Ultrasounds this late should be taken with a grain of salt when it comes to fetal weight.  I was high risk with DD and I am again with DD2.  When I was pregnant with DD they stated she was high 8 pounds at my 38 week visit.  I did not schedule an induction as I wanted to wait until she was ready, I figure my body could handle it.  Well, I ended up having severe complications and needed to be induced for my health and she ended up being a mere 6 lbs 14 oz's at almost 39 weeks.  Her legs and head measurements skewed the weight measurements provided by the ultrasound.

I would probably not schedule a c-section based on a fetal weight estimate done at 38 weeks.  Most women can fit high 8 - 9 pound babies through a birthing canal no problem.  Unless your doctor believes you have a pelvic disorder which would not allow baby to pass through I would probably wait it out.

Good luck to you and whatever you decide!  Smile

  • If I were you, I would NOT schedule a CS based on size alone.  Like pp's said, US sizing is not very accurate... besides, is there a reason to think you couldn't birth a 8-9 lb. baby?  Lots of women do and I wouldn't let the babies weight scare you too much.

I did have a CS for my first baby and while it was a good experience, I would never consent to a CS without trying to labor first.  I understand your fears- and probably excitement is getting the best of you- I just don't see a medical reason for needing a CS for you at this point.

  • Thats what i would decide too! How exciting, Good luck, i think you'll be happy deciding to have a sechedualed c-section. I bet it will go much smoother than an induction!

  • I had a final ultrasound a few days before my planned c/s and they estimated her at 7 lbs 7 oz, and she came out weighing 8 lbs 4 oz. I was in the exact same position and opted for a c/s and am 100% happy with my decision.

  • With my first pregnancy, we opted for a c-section due to DD's estimated size.  We planned for a c-section when I would have been exactly 39 weeks, but DD had other ideas and decided to come 4 days early.  My water broke when I wasn't even thinned or dilated, so I can only imagine how long labor would have been if I didn't have a c-section.  When DD came out weighing 8 lbs, 12 oz., my OB immediately said that we had made the right decision.  This was based in part on the fact that something was narrow and he told me from the beginning that I probably couldn't vaginally deliver a baby over 7.5 lbs.  Good luck to you!
