Do you mind talking to me about your weight gain? How long did you carry your babies and how much did they weigh at birth? Also, did you read Dr. Luke's book? Thoughts? I've just finished most of it and I'm a little overwhelmed at the thought of gaining 20 pounds by 20 weeks. I gained 24 total with DS and ate whatever, whenever (after a lot of nausea and vomiting in the first 20 weeks). Because of said sickness, I didn't start gaining anything til 16 weeks. I'm hoping that since there are two babies, my body will get the message to start packing it on. I'm throwing up every day but usually in the afternoon and evening I'm able to keep down what I eat. I think I've gained about 3 or 4 pounds so far but I still have a long way to go!
I'm just feeling stressed about this--I really want to do what's best for them and Dr. Luke goes on and on about the benefits of the weight gain by 20 and 28 weeks. I'm just worried that I'm not going to be able to, despite my husband's best efforts with frequent milkshakes ![]()
Re: Joyco, Feisty & other twin mamas
Do you mind talking to me about your weight gain? I gained 31 pounds. My OB was never worried because the boys were growing just fine and my peri would always measure them at those appointments to make sure I didn't have IUGR. I was worried about not having gained much, but I really couldn't. I only had a couple of months where I wasn't tossing my cookies or feeling like utter crap. I think I gained most of my weight in my 2nd trimester.
How long did you carry your babies and how much did they weigh at birth? I carried them to 38w1d. I could have gone longer though. I didn't have any issues with pre-e, high blood pressure, nothing. My OB says I was "meant to carry twins", but I highly disagree.
She didn't want me to go longer than 38 weeks though because that's when *she* delivers twins for the most part, I suppose. Baby A was 6lbs 1oz, 19.5 inches long and B was 6lbs 2oz, 19 inches long. Pretty good weights for as little as I gained.
Also, did you read Dr. Luke's book? Thoughts? I did not. My insurance company sent me a copy, but I got a little pissed at this book telling me I should gain so much weight and I physically could not. Nothing would stay down in the first trimester and believe me, I was trying to eat! So yeah, no. Your body is not going to really know to pack on the pounds, but whatever you DO pack on, your body WILL know to send it all to your babes.
I was the same way--I had afternoon sickness, I would feel fine in the morning but by ~2p, I would just go steadily downhill with how horrible I felt.
I wouldn't worry too much about the weight gain as specified by Dr. Luke's book. As long as your OB/peri are not concerned, don't stress. Everyone is completely different. My niece gained 63 pounds with her singleton! But then, she didn't get any nausea at all. Oh, and I don't think the lack of weight gain effected my kiddos in any negative way.
I think Feisty went to 36w and her kids were bigger, let's see if she chimes in. Who else had twins---Cheer4State, Kim777...
One of the first things my OB told me when we found out I was carrying twins was that she wanted me to gain 50 lbs. And I was all, GAME ON! But then by the first trimester, I had hardly gained any weight. I didn't have much in the way of morning sickness thankfully. I just wasn't gaining. Everyone was telling me that I needed to. I did read Dr. Luke's book, and her recommendation was to gain 1 lbs per week. So at that point I started to freak (but I was already kinda freaked out about the pregnancy for other unrelated reasons) and decided that I'd really go after it. I started having milkshakes and burgers and eating whatever the hell I wanted. Then I got on track with the weight gain. And then I started developing signs of pre-e and gained a ton of water weight, as in about a pound a day for 3 weeks. That's over 20 lbs of (mostly) water. I was miserable. So all in all, I gained a total of 70 freaking pounds!
I delivered at 36w3d by c-section because my OB was worried about pre-e. My guys were 6.25 and 6.5 lbs. I don't know if gaining all that weight was necessary, but my boys were big and healthy and didn't need any NICU time so I'm not going to second guess myself. FWIW, I lost 52 lbs in the first 3 weeks after having the boys. I'm still working on 10 of that last 18.
That's it?! They just must be good eaters now. How long were they?
Oh and ditto the losing 52 pounds. I lost exactly 52 pounds about 1-2 weeks after having the boys. Coops only needed NICU time for jaundice and I think that had more to do w/ him and I having different blood types (or so I've heard).
Yep! I think Kim777's kids were even bigger, and she gained less than half the weight I did. And they were the same gestation age. I can't remember how long they were. Maybe 19.5? Maybe 20?
Holy cow! I don't know how I missed your story, but that is scary. So glad they're doing well.
I gained 70 pounds when I was pregnant with my boys. I carried my boys until my scheduled c-section at 38w1d. They weighed 6.6 and 6.10 and were 18.5 and 19 inches long.
I had no morning sickness - thank goodness. I just ate ALOT. I would wake up at night to eat.
I loved it. I actually miss being pregnant because of the amount of food I could eat.
I had gained 40 pounds by 20 weeks. I did not read Dr. Luke's book. And my OB never said anything to me regarding my weight. So I cannot really say anything regarding that. I think you just do the best that you can and try not to stress yourself out. You cannot force the food to stay down, ya know?
Good luck!
Obviously I don't have my twins yet, but I had to give up on Dr. Luke's book. It was stressing me out. I don't think I'd have a huge issue gaining the weight but I would doing it the right way. I only eat white meat and even that I don't like --and it's been impossible to eat so far this pregnancy. I always feel like I'm not getting enough protein (well...I'm sure I'm not).
I'm now seeing an MFM as my primary OB (it's different here in Mass) and as of yet, he hasn't talked to me about weight again. Again, my u/s's are showing good growth weight. I've gained 14 lbs so far.
I have found with this pregnancy that over-educating myself is anxiety-producing. I started spending some time on the MoM's board but it just stressed me out. I'd rather just talk to my OB about any concerns he or I have, rather than taking on all the potentials - you know? (I'm sure that sounds ignorant, but with all the stress we've had with transitioning across the country, etc. I just need to f'in relax!)

I was overweight when I got pregnant. I ended up loosing a ton of weight and delivered 10 pounds lighter than I was when I delivered. I ate healthy but high calorie food - ice cream milk shakes, chicken sandwiches, etc. I did eat some protein bars because I could not stomach much for the first 5 or so months.
I delivered at 36w1d due to IUGR and placental breakdown of Baby A. She delivered at 4lbs 14oz, he delivered at 6lbs 1oz. Both were 19 inches. No NICU time for either.
I read Dr. Lukes book on prenatal nutrition and on what you eat determines if your kid will be obese or not in adulthood. Did I follow them religiously - No. I liked education and did my best to know my options, ask appropriate questions and make an educated decision with my MFM (Dr.Berry) and OB (Dr. Michelle Gooch).
Married and it feels so good!
