We will be getting 2 month shots next week. I saw a lot of posts about giving tylenol for pain after getting the shots so I went to buy it to have it on hand if we need it. I could only find Tylenol for ages 2-7. Is this what you use just at a dosage prescribed by the doctor based on LO's weight?
Re: 2 month shots-tylenol question
No. They make acetaminophen for infants. The brand I saw on shelves around here is called Little Fevers.
I'd be mindful of giving acetominaphen. I did after DS's 2 month shots because he seemed uncomfortable, but he probably didn't really need it. After I switched pediatricians I learned that there is some speculation that acetominaphen can actually cause asthma in kids. It's proven that it makes asthma symptoms worse in kids who already have asthma. Google it.
The kind we got (generic oral liquid acetaminophen) was confusing, too. It says "Infant drops" right on the front, but also says "for ages 2-7". Huh?? My husband assured me it was the only acetaminophen he could find (for babies). It is probably the same kind you got. It *is* the correct kind, but be careful on the dosing - be sure to check the mg/mL listed on the front. I guess most have switched to 500mg/5mL for their strength, but some are still 80mg/.8mL, including the brand we bought. The dosing chart the doctor gave us was for the 500/5 so if I had given him the dose recommended, it would have been more than twice the correct amount. Luckily my doctor warned me about the change in strength so I checked, double checked, and then went ahead and brought the bottle with me to his appointment to make sure and get the proper dosage because I wasn't trusting my math skills. I think it ended up to be .4mL ever 4-6 hours but don't quote me on that. You can always bring it in with you and ask while you're there, just to be safe!
Hopefully there was something helpful in the middle of my rambling there.
FYI, Pediacare fever reducer is still tylenol.
It's still not any different. Probably just has a different dropper with the dosages on it.
ETA: From the Pedicare website:
PediaCare? Children's Fever Reducer / Pain Reliever with Acetaminophen
PediaCare? Infants Fever Reducer / Pain Reliever
So basically they ARE in fact the same thing, but have a different dropper inside so it's easier to give the correct dosage. The directions even still say to ask a pediatrician for babies under age 2.
