anyone use generic formula

I used name brand with DD, and I feel horrible doing this, but formula for two boys is so expensive.  The boys are currently on Enfamil Gentlease ($25 for 22 oz), and Sam's club makes a generic version of the formula ($14.88 for 48 oz).  You get almost twice the formula for half the price, so I'm considering it.

My Dr. said that generic formula is regulated by the FDA and it's fine, but I'm reading many babies tend to be gassier on the generic versions.  One of my boys is really gassy, so I'd hate to make it worse.  Anyone using this generic formula?  What about any other generic formula?  What are your thoughts?

  • We started off with Similac Advance and switched to Kirkland/Costo brand around 3 or 4 months.  I'm kicking myself we didn't do it sooner!  I loved the Costco formula and DDs didn't seem to have any issues with it.  The price didn't hurt either. :-)

  • It can never hurt to try!  Just make sure to have your regular formula on hand until you know the generic works for your babies :)

I'm all for generic brands if the quality is similar.

  • I have to agree with previous posters. We used Similac Advanced and Sensitive until my twins were 10 weeks old. Then we switched to the Kirkland Brand. It's exactly the same and my husband and I have not noticed any difference in gassiness or fussiness of our two little ones. Plus, we go through the Costco can in 4.5 days, so it's definitley a cost savings seeing as how the price of Similac keeps going up in our area. I will note, that when we switched them we made a deal with each other to stick with the generic brand for at least 2 weeks. Our pedi told us that whenever you switch formulas there can be a transition period that can take 2 weeks for complete adjustment to occur. But we never saw any differences and haven't looked back.

  • We used the Kirkland brand from Costco. My boys never seemed to have any issues with it. It really does save money when you compaare it to name brand ones. :)

    Good luck!

  • We actually use the Up and Up Target brand of the Gentlese, and we couldn't be happier.  When we switched from Enfacare I felt like it was time to try the Target brand, because I was afraid if we didn't, we never would.

The price definitely makes it a lot easier!

  • SLPMel- how much is the target brand of Gentlease, and how many ounces?  The sam's club version is 48 oz for $21.98, which is the best deal I have been able to find.

  • We used generic mostly.  Like your Dr. said, formula is regulated so it all has the same minimum requirements in it.  As far as being gassier, I've heard that but my guys didn't have an issue.  Personally I'd try the generic and if it doesn't work then you know.  Heck, even if it works for 1 and not the other, use it for the one it does work for, it'll still save you tons even if you have to buy name brand for 1.

ETA:  To make the transition even easier we mixed 1 generic can with 1 name brand can the first time.

  • I got 36 oz for $16.99 (but it was on sale and they have a $1 off coupon).

You can order it online right now  for 144 oz for $75.70.

So I think yours is better!!!  Big Smile

  • The difference is the combining ingredients. We've noticed the store brands don't mix as well unless you use hot water. Our daugther gets constipated on one store brand, but not the kirkland. You just have to try it to see! I might do half and half the first day to ease them into it. Good luck!

  • We used the Sam's version of Gentlease, and it was great for us. We mixed it using a Doc Brown's pitcher, and never had a problem with the consistency or clumping. It saved us a TON of money! (And we had one spitter and one reflux baby, and they didn't do any better/worse on one formula over another.)

  • We started the twins on Targets brand of formula the day they came home from the hospital and never looked back!  It was awesome to save money, well rather pay as much for two cans of generic as I would for one brand name can.
  • I use the Target version of Gentlease without any issue.  We go through so much, there's no way I could afford the name brand.  You can often find coupons for it on coupons.target.com.
