I need to vent a minute. I was supposed to start a new job this coming Monday - i'm a veterinarian and my license was not yet approved so i contacted my boss THREE WEEKS AGO and asked her whether I would still be able to start, whether my license was approved or not. A veterinarian can be work without a license as long as they are in training and supervised by another veterinarian - I was going to be in training for six weeks so this should not have been an issue. My boss assured me I would be able to start work and so I began the process for daycare to begin.
Yesterday, the headquarters of the corporate veterinary hospitals contacted me and asked me if I had my license. I replied no but that my boss had told me that I could still start work. It turns out that she was wrong. Meanwhile, daycare is set and, after talking to them, they told me that I had to continue with them because the date had been set (understandable). I am now facing spending $400/week for the next month without me actually working.
I am beyond livid. I took the necessary steps to make sure all 't's were crossed and 'i's were dotted and still things fall apart. I certainly don't blame the daycare people...but i'm so angry that my direct supervisor, who is in charge of 15 different hospitals and many, many veterinarians, could be so wrong on this and not know her corporate rules.
Sorry, vent over.
Re: Job/Daycare disaster
That completely sucks. I'm sorry considering its the holidays and with how expensive daycare is I'm sure the money could be going to different things. Maybe send P to daycare a few of those days and get a jump start on holiday decorating, christmas shopping, without baby in tow.
I usually find that those "in charge" really don't know the ins/outs of those kind of situations and that only HR would know.
I'm so sorry, That's really not fair. I would be livid too. Can you talk to your boss about the predicament you are in and see if you can be accommodated in some way? Can you ask the center if you can send DD part time for the next month?
As an aside, are you transferring states or are you a new vet? My SIL is a medical doctor and had trouble with her license transferring to another state. The state sat on it for 4 months delaying her work start time for over a month. Finally she called her congressperson and they made a call and her license was successfully transferred the next day.
Jitterbug, I've never worked in a corporation so haven't dealt with an HR department before. I've just found out that you are ABSOLUTELY right and i've learned a good lesson (the hard way). I'll be sure to contact HR in the future.
Jellisy, I've contacted both my supervisor and the daycare today and am trying to see what options I have. I've stressed to the supervisor (in a voicemail because, of course, she didn't pick up) that we're taking quite a financial hit. We'll see what happens. The daycare told me that they would try to work with me to do some part time options.
I unfortunately was not license because I worked at a university as a veterinarian for four years - you are covered by the 'university license' and don't need to be licensed when working for an academic institution (that's how they can train residents from all over the country easily) - all my licenses from previous states had expired because i didn't see the point in paying money to keep them up when i was legally covered. Hindsight is 20/20 but i sure wish i had kept ONE of them up now. The board only meets once a month so i have to wait till next month to get this moving.
The same thing goes for my field typically... you don't have to be a licensed professional counselor to work as a therapist, but you have to work under someone else's license (and they take full responsibility/liability). I did this for a couple of years while I was doing my residency.
Is there some other way they can employ you without you actually being a vet for the time being? Meaning, you can still go to work and collect a paycheck somehow so you don't "waste" $1600? Though I agree with pp, you can get a ton done in a month without your DD all day (or even take some much needed time for yourself to watch TV, go to the spa, read or do anything at all!). That being said, I know it would be tough for me to be away from DS all day and not be working at all, so I definitely see this as a predicament.
This isn't exactly the same situation, but we got a spot at our daycare starting 1 month before my maternity leave was over, and we had to take it and start paying for full-time daycare or risk losing the spot entirely. I was able to go back to work PT during that month, so not exactly the same situation as you, but it was kind of nice to be able to slowly transition the baby to daycare during that period. So sending her PT for a month may not be such a bad thing. It does suck that you can't work PT and can't get paid though.
wow that sucks!!
can you work in another capacity while waiting for your license? helping clean the animals, answering phones, etc. I think it's worth asking!
Thanks for listening and for the suggestions. I'm still waiting to hear back from my supervisor. I'd love to be able to work in some capacity but i'm not very hopeful. You are all right, though, that i should just make the best of it, if that's the situation i'm stuck with. I just have a hard time picturing the little girl in daycare while i'm still around - but it's true that i could get a lot more done or take a couple of hours to myself here and there.
I'll let you all know how this pans out <fingers crossed>
