silly vent re: turkey day

We're hosting Turkey Day this year for BIL, SIL and nephew, a family friend and my uncle.  We have celebrated the holiday with BIL and family for the last several years and every year there is some sort of moment that gives me either laugh or roll my eyes.

This year I sent out the invitation and asked them to bring something.  SIL offered to bring lentil soup.  I have to say this made me laugh...is there a Turkey Day lentil soup tradition I have missed?   Don't get me wrong, I like lentil soup (really I do!), but it's just not something that I think of going with sweet potatoes, turkey, cranberries and pumpkin pie.  Maybe I am not thinking outside the box enough?  ;)

Since we are possibly doing a buffet style approach, instead of all sitting at the table...and since I don't have enough nice soup bowls (it sounds really silly, I know, but I really enjoy using our good china for holidays and we don't have the soup bowls to go with it...and our every day ones are a little worse for wear)... I asked if she minded bringing something else, like a veggie side dish.  She seemed good with that...so no lentil soup.  Hopefully I'm not missing out on something grand...

  • I don't think lentil soup is that weird, but you're hosting and you have perfectly good reasons not to want soup. My family usually serves something non-traditional as an appetizer. We've had mussles and oysters a few times. So I guess I'm used to some non-traditional Thanksgiving foods and it always works out fine.

  • i could see lentil soup working.  i mean, it's earthy in my mind & thanksgiving is about celebrating (in addition to family/friends/etc) the abundance of the harvest.

however, i'm with you.  i like to bust out the china & we don't have any soup bowls!

I think this was the main issue for me.  I actually considered going out and getting new soup bowls;)

  • Flavor wise I could see how lentil soup works.  Lentils are a fall/winter flavor for me and they are very earthy.  Our Thanksgivings have gotten some international flair since my SIL entered the family.  She always brings curry or biryani or some other Indian delight.  It was odd at first, but it's nice to celebrate everyone's traditions.  I don't think it's awful to ask for a sub of vegetables.  Someone has to have the master plan for the meal and if that's what's needed, I think that is very reasonable ask.
  • yeah, we had a potluck bbq once & someone brought chili.  i didn't have any bowls because i mean...who brings chili to an outdoor potluck in JULY?!?!?

my husband had to run out & get some at the last minute!
