Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

When was your LO off the bottle?

DS will be 14 months on the 30th and still on the bottle. He will drink water out of a sippy but doesn't like drinking milk out of a sippy - at least for us. Apparently he drinks milk out of a sippy for daycare and for my parents but throws a shiitfit for us. I know eventually I'm going to have to lay the hammer down and just take it away. I think the nighttime bottle is going to be the hardest just because it is part of our routine. Any tips?

Re: When was your LO off the bottle?

  • DD= 14 months

    DS= 8.5 months

DS took to the sippy like a champ, and then we switched to a straw cup at 8 1/2 months and never looked back.

Have you tried a straw cup at all?

  • With dd1, she was on the bottle for naps and bedtime until 20m or so. We started by switching to bottles only at bedtimes. Other than that sippy cups with meals and snacks. If she refused milk in the sippy I would offer water or watered down juice. I kept offering the sippy with milk first, for sometime. Eventually she accepted milk in sippy cup, as that was the only option.

If she asked for the baba, I told her that was for bedtime and was she ready to go night night.

We did the same with dd2, except much sooner. At 1, she only got milk in a bottle and bedtimes, and sippy cup at all other times. About 14 months, she wasn't getting a bottle before bed anymore, so then bottles went bye bye.

You might want to find a sippy that feels more like a bottle to lo.

  • Dropped afternoon bottle at 12 months (replaced with sippy and snack), morning bottle at 13 months (replaced with sippy and breakfast), and bedtime bottle at 14 months (replaced with sippy of milk).

  • You are right you just have to do it. DD stopped bottles at 12ish months. We just combined it with switching to WCM. DD loved WCM from the beginning, but even she dropped her intake for about a week or so. So don't worry if your DS boycotts for a few days. The only thing we did was get her special "milk cups" they were different from the ones that we put water in.
  • DS ~ 11 1/2 months

    DD ~ 8 months

I also strongly recommend the straw cup if you haven't already.

  • Ours is still on the bottle, at almost 14 months.

Unfortunately, our daughter has some difficulty gaining/maintaining weight and, as she absolutely refuses to drink her milk out of anything but a bottle, our Doctor recommended allowing her to remain on it for a few more months, and then we will review.

  • DD1 - 15 mo, DD2 - never took one.  DD3 - 18 mo and we are ditching it this weekend.  (well after we get back into town Friday!!)
  • DD wasn't completely 100% off the bottle 'till 16 1/2 months.  Up 'till then she still got a morning and bedtime bottle.

  • DS was around 18 months...one day I just tossed them in the trash and that was it. He was only taking milk in the am and pm but I was ready to be done with it. It took maybe 2 days of whining and not drinking much for him to give into the sippy.
  • DD = 10.5 months for daytime bottles, 11 months night time bottle... I gave her the option and she went with it.

DS = hated sippy cups until 11.5 months. 12m 1w, he's completely on sippy.

With both kids I stopped holding them to feed morning and afternoon bottles and just gave a bottle with breakfast/lunch. After they got used to that, I switched into sippy's. After a while of that, I added one at dinner and that was all she wrote. With DD I weaned her off the night bottle by replacing milk (which she had enough of throughout the day) with water which was less appealing to her and she just would go to bed after a sip or two.

  • DD is still taking a nighttime bottle only at 13 months. We have started trying the sippy cup at night a couple times this past week and she was fine. She seems to play with the bottle more so I am ready for her to get on the cup all the time.

  • I took it away cold turkey at 10 months.
  • My DD still gets a nighttime bottle but I was planning on throwing them away tomorrow. She drinks out of a sippy cup for everything, including milk during the day. I honestly have no idea why we're still giving her a bottle.
  • 11 1/2 months for the day time bottles and 12 1/2 months for the night one. I think you just need to bite the bullet. You know he can drink out of one so just offer sippies and don't give him a choice.

  • At 12 months he was off the bottle except for the night time bottle.  Weaned the night time bottle around 14 months.

Cold turkey worked for us.  It was a rough couple of days but then everything was fine.  Good luck!

  • We stopped cold turkey at 12 months when we found a sippy DD would drink milk from.

  • Ditching it tomorrow! First whole day without a bottle! She only gets two 6 oz bottles now, one in the morning and one at around snack time (only if she is super whiny for it). I think she will love WCM, so I'm hoping it goes well tomorrow!

  • DS was off the bottle at 1. He used the Nuby soft spout sippycups at 1st but then they began to LEAK so then we switched to PLAYTEX hard spout cups which works better. GL

  • DS1 I stopped nursing at 18m, but I think it was by at least 14m that we stopped giving him a bottle.  I either nursed or he got a sippy.  DS2 hardly got any bottles at all, probably not many more then a dozen.  We started transitioning to a sippy at 11m and by 14 months I was done nursing and he was only on a sippy.

  • I am very confused. I keep hearing that we aren't supposed to transition kids from the bottle to the sippy, but rather get them to learn how to use a real cup... but it seems like everyone does transition to the sippy...?

In any case, DS is not interested in the sippy, a regular cup or a cup with a built-in straw. And as we are about to throw him into a major life change (we are moving to a new country - i.e. new time zone, new language, new daycare, new house, new people) we are going to wait until he's settled after the move to push the transition away from the bottle. Hopefully it will be before the new baby comes (when DS will be 16 months), but if that doesn't happen, I don't really care.

  • DS stopped taking daytime bottles around 13/14 months.  He took his bedtime bottle until 20 months.  I still give him milk at bedtime but out of a cup with a straw.

  • 10 months. He wouldn't drink water from it, but as soon as we put milk in it, he sucked it right down. I think he just wasn't impressed with water.

  • Not yet. Well he only gets a sippy in the morning and afternoon but at night we give him a bottle. We plan to wean that part soon.

  • He was officially off around 13 months.  He would still get one in the middle of the night, but we had to break that habit and now I don't even pull them out anymore.

  • DS was 12 months. He had been practicing with a sippy and a little bit of water since 6 months, so he didn't even blink when I took the bottle away.

  • My LO was totally off bottles at 13 months.  Started doing the sippy cup around 10 months old during the day and bottles just at nap and bed. Then at 12 months, started to wean from those.  Nap times were no big deal, bedtime bottles I started off by giving a little less each and every night until he was down to just 1 oz in a bottle and then stop.  Worked like a charm, no fits, no crying, no nothing.  Then I threw the bottles out so I wouldn't be tempted to give in, if he did have a fit.  If they aren't there you can't give in.
