Re: to doppler or not to doppler

  • Not...Two heartbeats=too much worry.  Even my OB couldn't find both on a few occasions with the doppler.

  • we rented one with both pregnancies and were happy to have it when i was not feeling a lot of movement - or had to take meds for pain (I had kidney stones with my first pg, and horrible migraines with both).

just know that it's not always easy to find the HB's - so you can't freak out.  My OB always told me if I couldn't find them I could call him and come in to ahve a check- it was never needed.... either we'd find them, or i'd feel movement shortly after and not need to call the OB.

get one with a digital count b/c it's hard to find both if you are doing math to figure out the rate.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • I had one for my first pregnancy and used it ALL THE TIME. Since I already had it, I did pull it out a couple of times (but only after my OB found the HB's, so I knew about where to look). I was always able to find them, but I didn't stress over it because I knew the likelihood of finding both was slim. If you think it will make you more anxious, then my vote is no. ;)
  • Nope.  My OB told me not to get one and for once in my life I listened.  I would have driven myself batty.  I did a good job of that WITHOUT a doppler!

  • My MFM told me not to get one.  His explanation was that the ones they use cost thousands of dollars and I wasn't going to get the same quality of equipment.
  • I'm on the fence whether to recommend one or not ... I've had one since my daughter, and gave it away on purpose until the babies were about 12-13 weeks. But even at that time, I couldn't tell who was who, and where they were, so from early on, until about 14 weeks I stopped by my OB's end of day each thurs and he would u/s scan me for HB's quick. That way we both had a decent weekend, lol.

Once I knew where they were (I have frequent u/s due to some issues) I do ok finding them, but one doesn't move much. The other squirrel's all over the place.

PLUS... both (b/g)  have HB's in the 140's... so yeh, it's tricky. But can be done when I can't feel them moving all the time. (I'm almost 19 weeks)

ps I use a BIG blog of aloe gel and that seems to really cut down on noise.

  • Nope. I had so many appointments anyway it didn't matter.

This was me too.  I didn't expect to find separate HBs...sometimes I could but not always.  I had a late loss before the twins and this is the only thing that got me to the point I felt regular movement.

  • I did and glad to have it after having a loss before getting pregnant with my boys. I was able to find each heartbeat easily after knowing where each was, had a US every 2 weeks so that helped to find them.

  • I got one...Sonoline B. It cost me $50 and it's nice to have. I, like some others, told myself from the beginning that I'd be happy just to find 1 heartbeat. At this point not even my OB can find them each on a doppler.

    I'm glad I have it.  :)

  • thanks girls....!   i'll see how i feel as time goes on...i appreciate all of our responses!!!

  • No.  My doctor told me it would just drive me crazy.  When they are so small (and I'm assuming that's when you would have it.  After 20ish weeks, you feel them enough to be reassured), it can be really hard to find both HBs on a doppler.  I'd say don't do it, and you'll make it through :)

  • I looked into it too but my doctor also has a hard time finding both on the handheld doppler, or distinguishing b/w them.

Also, I have gotten way more ultrasounds than any of my friends with singletons, so for me, all those ultrasounds are good reassurance.

I'd say pass, unless you know someone that will let you borrow it for free or something, even then, it might frustrate you more than make you at ease.

  • No I didn't because I didn't want to freak myself out if I couldn't find one!  I work on L&D (in cord blood donation) and all of my nurse friends advised against it. If I want to hear them I ask one of the nurses to find them for me. Plus they both have anterior placentas making them harder to find.

    This!

We LOVE ours.  We're pretty much always able to find both heartbeats.  One baby is low down by my pelvis and the other is up by my navel.  I listen to it for a short while daily.  One of my placentas is anterior, so I am just starting to feel them move & mostly on the side.  For us, it was a great investment.
