Trouble TTC

Q about how progesterone works?

So I did my 7dpo bloodwork and my progesterone was 6.8.  My dr is saying that I may have O'd later than we thought and that's why my level was low.  Does this make sense?  I'm going to play dumb here and ask, there's a progesterone surge at 7dpo?  I've never really had to pay attention to my progesterone levels before so this part is all new to me.  Could someone explain how that part works?  My temps are still staying up above coverline at this point (I'm currently 10dpo...maybe). :)

Re: Q about how progesterone works?

  • You could have low progesterone. The way I understand it (someone correct me if I am wrong) After you ovulate the hormone progesterone takes over. You should have progesterone numbers of about 10 or higher until you have your period then you start a new cycle. If you have numbers under 10 during the LP then it can effect implantation of a fertilized egg. That is why some women take supplemental either natural cream or rx for the Dr.

Either way I hope you get it figured out

  • 7dpo bloodwork is not super accurate.  The only way to know for sure when you are 7dpo is by u/s.  Most of the time when doing that bloodwork you are told to come in on CD21 (inaccurate) or 7 days after a + opk (inaccurate.)  That number means that you did ovulate.  Ideally you have over 10 for a non-medicated cycle and over 15 for a medicated cycle, but looking at one draw is not a complete picture.

Also, it does not go up and stay up.  You get a P4 rise and then a fall if you're not pg, when you then get AF.  Or you get a rise and stay up if you are pg.

Most ladies take progesterone supplementation during treatment cycles whether they have low P4 or not, just to make sure everything is okay.  And just an FYI, my P4 was 2.24 while taking 2x a day supps while pg with my sticky.  It's just a number.  You need a complete picture to fully understand what is going on in there.
