my 3-year-old broke her collarbone

Does anyone have experience with this? Apparently a collarbone break is a very common injury for children. I am wondering how long your little one had to take pain meds. She is wearing a sling or wrap and will have to continue that for about 4-6 weeks. Any other advice on how to make her life (and/or my life) easier in coping with this? Thanks. :)

Re: my 3-year-old broke her collarbone

  • I don't know about for children, but my FIL broke his collarbone, as did my grandma.  They both had to sleep in recliners until the bones set properly.  It was tough on both of them, so I can't imagine how hard it is for a kid.  I'm so sorry!  How does that happen?  Why is it such a common injury for kids?

  • No advice off the top of my head but so sorry to hear that. I hope that she is feels better quickly. I know it can't be easy on you either.

She was with her Dad... he says she fell off her bed onto her shoulder. I don't know why it's so common - just read that online. I think it is an easier healing process for children vs adults. I feel so bad for her having to keep her arm in a sling or wrap all the time. :(

  • I'm so sorry!  I broke my collarbone the first day of first grade.  I don't remember too much about it, but my Mom says the hardest part was nighttime.  Hopefully you get a response from someone with recent experience but I'm happy to ask my Mom about it if not.

Megan broke her leg at 2, which is probably totally different.  But she was only on the pain meds for a couple days.  She did have a cast though, so I think that reduces the pain a lot since it keeps the bones from moving.

  • My little boy broke his also when he was 3. He seemed to bounce back pretty quickly. We gave pain meds for the first couple of days then he never seemed in any kind of pain or to be having any kind of discomfort so we held off. He had trouble sleeping for the first couple of days but then was fine.He did wear the sling for a few weeks everything healed up just fine. They are alot more resiliant than we think! Hope she feels better soon!
  • :( I'm sorry. No advice, but I wanted to throw out there that J broke his collarbone that way as a kid -- rolling off of his bed while sleeping. I can see how it's common.  I hope it heals well and quickly for her!
  • I've broken my collarbone twice.  Once as a child...I was climbing on a swing that was too high and fell off.  The second time was as an adult at a Primus show.

I don't remember breaking it as a child.  As an adult, I wore a shoulder brace all the time.  I had 2--I would take one off to dry after taking a shower.  I don't remember how long I took meds for.  It was annoying, but I was glad I kept the brace on for the entire time they told me to.

I wish I had some advice on how to make life easier, but I was an adult and I was more conscious of my actions.  I did more that I should have, but I was a freelancer, so it was impossible to stay completely out of work for 6 weeks.  I did the minimum I could.

    I'm sorry she got hurt.
