Is this a generational thing?

So I think I've mentioned that numerous times, my FIL makes snarky comments about how "the kids certainly don't need any more toys".  He does it regularly, and I don't appreciate that attitude about how they are spoiled or have too much or whatever.  It's really no one's business how I spend my money - or how I have gotten so much at the consignment shop or Craigs - but do I really need to justify my lifestyle? (It's the attitude that bothers me, not the point of view - we are all entitled to our own opinions).

Anyway we were at a 5-year-old's bday party this weekend, at her house.  The kids were playing in her room and DH's uncle comes up and was all like "kids these days" and "certainly have enough toys" with a big eye roll.

I don't really care what people's opinions are about if I have too many toys or not - but I am wondering if this is a generational thing... do any of you have parents / grandparents / etc that have made comments like this?  I know too I hear about how "when they were this age" they had only a couple toys.

Re: Is this a generational thing?

  • Just about everyone seems to think my kids have too many toys.  Although, I also SAH and most ppl who comment either send or sent their kids to day care or don't have kids.  I think it makes a difference if the kids are home all day or someplace else, if they are home 40+ hrs more a week, they need more toys to fill their time.

  • Yeah it is generational but I totally agree that everyone has too much. And most of it is plastic crap which I hate. We're doing a book-only christmas this year (from relatives) esp since the kids birthdays are so close to Christmas. Evan got a TON of stuff on Saturday and I can't imagine him getting the same amount a month from now!

  • Maybe.  I think most kids have way too much stuff.  My mom was a SAHM and my brother and I didn't have nearly the amount of stuff DD has.  And DD doesn't have anywhere close to the amount of stuff other kids her age have. Maybe rather than being a generational thing it's more about how you were raised.  How much stuff you had and what seems normal to you. kwim?

  • I feel like kids now have way too much, but that is because of many reasons.  Our parents are the ones who buy most of it for our kids, so in our case it is not generational.  At Evan's birthday I told them all to tame it down for Christmas.  My Mom is giving them each a toy and then a nice check to put in their college savings accounts. Sometimes I think that it is because there are just so many more options for toys out there, that it is hard to choose.
