Parenting after a Loss

Napping for 6wk old (October ladies or anyone else with this info)

I was wondering how long your LO's napped after 6wks of age.  My LO was napping for at least 3 hours during the day between 9am and 9pm and sleeping through the night with his feedings and diaper changes.  Now he wants to only nap for an hour of so between 9am and 9 pm. He is not very cranky.  He just want to be awake and play. I was wondering what your routine is like around 6wks or so.  TIA

  • D had dropped off dramatically with the nappage this past week.  There was one day that stands out where he was basically awake from about 9am to 5pm (there were 10 min cat naps in there after feedings, but thats it).  He's also been shifting when his longest stretch of sleep is.  Its now more in the evenings than in the middle of the night.  Thankfully he's at least still sleeping during the night even with the change in his long sleep (mostly 3-4 hr stretches, sometimes with a 5ish hr one thrown in).  I'm pretty sure reflux has been the cause of his sleep change, along with wrapping up his growth spurt.  His sleep patterns changed at the same time the reflux reared its ugly head.

  • Z doesn't really nap. He'll close his eyes and pass out for 20-40 minuets and than he's up. I'd love the 2-3 hour nap period.

He's also sleeping 5/6 hours at night than gets up every 2 hours after that.

  • DD used to take 3 naps during the day for 2.5-3 hours each. This week, I'm lucky to get three naps. It is more two naps of 2 hours, and maybe a short 45 minute catnap.

She is also sleeping earlier now since her third nap (if we have one) is so short. She is having longer awake times (about 1.5-2 hours) in between naps instead of her usual diaper change/feed/pass out in between.

  • DS usually takes a few small naps (30 min) in the morning and a bigger (2-3 hr) nap in the afternoon.  There has been a few days he did not do the longer afternoon nap and he gets pretty cranky.

  • DS did this too. Then, I began making him nap for longer periods of time at 7.5w as he was clearly overtired.  I think it's all part of them discovering that there's a world out there.  They want to stay up and see it all!  After I got him to start napping longer (he was only doing 15 min at a time and I got him to go down for at least 45), he went onto a routine of being up for about two hours between naps and running the usual sleep, eat, play pattern.

The way I got him to nap more was to literally ride his butt about napping.  I sat him in the RnP and refused to let him up until he'd napped longer.  He didn't cry, but I also didn't pick him up.  I kept sounds low in the house and rocked him a lot in the RnP to get him back down to sleep.  I also rubbed his head if the rest didn't work.  It took several days of doing this, and literally constant work during the daytime, but it made him a better napper.
