help me with formula ?

Can someone explain to me how you prepare/store powdered formula for multiple babies? I've been microwaving the water and then adding the powder, but then I can't stick it back in the fridge to store it? And it seems like when I add the powder to the cold water (coming from our fridge filter) it clumps and doesn't mix as well as when its warm water. Forgive me if this is a no-brainer--I've never in my life used formula so this is all new to me! I need some tips to make it easier!

Re: help me with formula ?

  • We use tap (given the ok by our ped) or bottled water.  We pour the water, add the scoops of formula, shake to get all the clumps out and stick the bottles in a bowl of hot water (or let the hot water run over them) for a few minutes to get them warm.  Sometimes, if they're screaming, we just use room temp water.  They don't mind.

We use up & up now that they're older and I find that it mixes better than Enfamil or Similac for some weird reason.

I know some people mix a big pitcher of formula and pour and heat as needed.  Others make all the bottles for the day and pull them out and heat them as needed.

We do exactly this as well.

  • We use tap water. And Dr. Brown's formula pitchers. We just make a batch and put the pitcher in the fridge. Then we pour bottles as needed.

  • We made a batch in the Doc Brown formula pitcher, then went ahead and made the bottles. We used bottle warmers to heat them when we needed them.

  • Ditto the dr b pitcher with tap water. Love that thing! We do the scoops then fill it half with water, stir with a knife then add the rest of the water before adding the lid/mixer. We then make the bottles and store in the fridge or just put the full pitcher in the fridge. If you want to use filtered water I would keep it in a pitcher and let it get room temp before mixing to avoid the clumping issue.

  • I use RO (Reverse Osmosis) water for any drinking/cooking/bottles, the tap water in Arizona is awful. I LOVE my Dr Browns pitchers, I have two of those bad boys, partly because they are on different formulas, but I would have had two anyway just to keep up with supply. I mix up all 32oz, keep whatever is not being used in the fridge, you can keep formula in the fridge for 24 hours (I've gone a little longer than that shhh)

  • I have a Brita water pitcher I got off Amazon.  The water stays room temp and I just mix the bottles with the powder as needed.  If for some reason it feels cold I heat the water for about 5 or 6 seconds in the microwave and then mix.

I think the clumping also has something to do with humidity.  I have days I feel like it clumps up  more and I'm using the same temperature of water.

  • Like others, we use the Dr. Brown's pitcher and mix up a batch using filtered room temp water. I pour all the bottles (6 at a time) needed for the day and/or night and then mix another batch in the pitcher so it's ready to go for the next 6 bottles. We warm up with a quick 10/15 seconds in the microwave to take the chill off of the bottles.

  • We make bottles as needed. I use room temp bottle water. I actually stir the formula in using a long ice tea spoon or you can use a knife since we are using the bigger bottles now. We started stirring to cut down on the air bottles that shaking caused to help reduce some of their gas problems. To me stirring the formula keeps it from clumping.

We do this exactly.  After we put the girls down for the night, we make all of the next days bottles.  It makes things so much easier.  I definitely reccommend the formula pitcher!
