Trying to Get Pregnant

Thoughts on stopping birth control pills mid package?

We'd like to start TTC asap, but I'm not sure if I should complete the whole Yaz packet or just stop with the pills now.

  • Finish the pack unless you really want to jack yourself up.

  • I stopped in the middle of my packet and then got my period like four days later. I don't think it really matters either way.

Yes- your body will already been a nightmare to figure out after getting off of BCP. Use this time to start larning about TTC ('I'm new' link in my signature) and get in the habit of temping.

  • I'm don't think that it really matters, but in my case when I stopped my BCP back in 2006 at the END of the pack my periods came just as regular as they did while I was on the pill until I got pregnant in 2007. Now, I just stopped my BCP mid-pack last month, and I haven't had a period since October 14th. You might be totally fine though. Everyone's body will regulate differently. GL!

This. I got Mirena out in Sept, then went on birth control for like a week then stopped. Haven't gotten a period since and just had to take Provera to try to jump start it.

  • You can stop mid pack.  I did when I went off BC to TTC DS.  Be aware that it may take a while for your body to re-regulate.  Most of us ladies here chart our temperatures using Fertility Friend.  Fertility Friend also has great tutorials and information.  You can click on the link in any of signatures to sign up...it's free.

This.  I was impatient too, but waited until the end.  Stopping mid pack will throw your body off.

  • If your pill is the same hormone dose throughout your cycle, I think you would probably be OK stopping early.  If there are different hormone levels, it might screw with your body more to stop early.

I asked my OB about it about 2.5 years ago when we were starting to TTC #1.  He said that there is medically no difference in stopping mid pack vs. stopping at the end of a pack.  Both bleeds would be withdrawl bleeding (i.e. not a real period).  That's why I suggest starting to chart along with stopping BC to see what your body is doing.

This is true.  My advice above was based on an even dose of hormone throughout the pack.

Right, you are not really having a "cycle" on the pill anyway.  I used to take a single dose pill and I would sometimes change how many pills I took each month to be able to manipulate when my period would start.  It was NBD.

  • I would finish the pack. I wanted to stop mid pack and my doctor recommended finishing because you could mess up your cycles.
