What we should / shouldn't eat

Does anyone know a good resource with a list of the foods we should be avoiding? I've heard no cold cuts, which is going to blow! What will I do without my turkey?!

  • You can eat deli meat, just warm it up first. For instance, if you go to Subway, have them toast it.

  • You can eat cold cuts. Listeria (which is the concern in cold cuts) has been found more recently in produce than cold cuts. Also, you are more likely to die in a car crash while pregnant than get listeria in your entire life. So, if you give up lunch meat, give up driving anywhere too.

The only things my MW mentioned, were to limit my caffine intake, and to cut out the booze and try not to OD on heroine.

  • Loads of places to get info: nearly every pregnancy book will talk about nutrition and it can easily be "googled". As already mentioned, stay away from the bad habits like drinking alchol, caffeine (in moderation), drugs, medications, raw foods, uncooked eggs, watch which fish you eat due to high levels of mercury, eat healthy foods and get the nutrients you need. Avoid uncooked meats and as a backup, heat everything until steaming

Oooh, those last two might be hard habits for me to break. I was thinking I'd be good with those, just no cold cuts. Ha!

Seriously though, thanks for this info! I am going to get the book I saw referred to in another post, The Panic-Free Pregnancy.

Was relieved to finally get back to subway

  • It seems like every doctor has a different attitude about these things. My doctor told me no alcohol, no smoking, no drugs. Watch my fish and caffeine intake. Everything else in moderation. That's it.
  • Toasting the sandwich at Subway does not heat it enough to kill Listeria. It needs to be steaming hot (165 F). You can eat tuna at Subway, but no more than once a week. I have been eating their breakfast flatbread just with cheese, eggs, and veggies.

This.  My new OB says no caffeine, but I go off of my previous OB's rules.

"Everything in moderation" is my mantra.  My OB was a multiple time jeapordy winner and he is really relaxed about this thing called gestation.  His main beef was water intake.  I am supposed to drink a gallon of water a day, um.. ya right.
