Hi ladies! Its been a very busy week and I have been putting off writing this story until I had a little more sleep.
Soo...2 weeks ago, I was diagnosed with pregnancy induced hypertension and after another series of tests, we discovered it had progressed to pre-eclampsia. My doctor schedule my induction for 11/14.
On 11/13, we went into the hospital to begin the induction and they gave me the first dose of cytotec. At that point, I was about 1-2 cm dilated and 80% effaced. I sat around for 4 hours, had a few little contractions and was ready for my second dose around 2am. After that second dose, I began having pretty strong contractions and was not doing a great job breathing through them. Despite my previous resolve to avoid IV narcotics, I accepted a dose of stadol.
The next few hours were a blur because that medication definitely made me feel very "drugged" and out of it. I remember the contractions being painful, accepting another dose, and trying to cope by sitting on the medicine ball. DH said I wasn't making much sense at that point. The nurses offered to call anesthesia to get the epidural but it was around 4 or 5am and I didn't want to make him come in 2 hours early so I just toughed it out.
The anesthesiologist arrived around 6am and popped in that epidural in under 5 minutes. What a relief! They told me I could adjust the dose with the button but I did not need to do that at any point. I slept from 6am until noon with zero pain. At around noon, I woke up and let the nurse know I was feeling a lot of pressure like I needed to have a bowel movement. She checked me and realized I was 10cm and ready to start pushing!
They showed me what position I needed to be in and how to push with the contractions. Again, the epidural was perfect because I felt the pressure of the contractions and was able to push very effectively but I didn't feel the pain of the labor. After about 30 minutes of pushing, our little boy came out! He was born on 11/14/11 at 12:27pm weighing 6lbs 1 oz and measuring 18.25 inches.
