this probably goes in the "duh" category but LO was thoroughly enjoying her teething biscuit today while we were watching tv and the next thing i know DH jumps up and has his fingers in her mouth. apparently it broke off in the split second i looked away and she had a huge chunk in her mouth. he got it out, but what could have happened scared me a lot. i now know that i absolutely cannot even glance away if she's going to eat one. ug. if eel like the worst mom.
Re: teething biscuit psa
Eeek! I hate those biscuits...I have heard a lot of these stories. I usually only give LO teethers or some other hard food to chew on....but I suppose there is a risk with anything....so don't feel bad.
Oh no, please think twice before reaching into their mouths to get something out. We're doing BLW here, so we've had plenty of gagging moments.... which are super scary as the parent, but gagging (noisy spluttering, coughing, retching) isn't the same as choking (silent and panicky), and gagging is something they can and should work out on their own. Sticking fingers in there risks pushing the food further back. Our pediatrician said we should only use the baby heimlich, and even then only if she's actually choking (which we'd know because she wouldn't be able to cough and splutter, she'd be silent and in a full panic).
My DS gagged so many times on store bought teething biscuits that i won't buy them for my DD. I did find an online tutorial on how to make your own. it is SUPER easy and there is nothing really for them to choke on...My DD LOVES them.
