How to keep mashed potatoes hot! (N3TR obv)

We're suppose to bring masked potatoes to MH's family's Thanksgiving on Thursday but it's in the evening and we're going to my mom's in the late morning/early afternoon. I would need to make the potatoes in the morning but how do I keep them hot/make sure they're still good by the evening?

The only thing I can come up with is to make them then put them in a crock pot on low. But I'm afraid they'll end up over cooking. Any ideas? How do you keep your food hot? :)

Thanks!

  • I have never kept mashed potatoes hot before, but I have had success with reheating them.  I put the cold potatoes in a pot on the stove and mix in milk and butter, once reheated they taste fresh.

    Good luck.

  • What about putting one of those bags in the crockpot before the potatoes so they dont burn or stick, and keep it on warm/low. Or reheat them :)

  • I would not try to keep them hot all day in a crockpot. I would probably either microwave them or re-heat on the stove (adding in add'l butter or milk if needed) before you are ready to eat.

This! I suggest not mashing them until the night. Cook the potatoes and leave them in a bowl. Then right before it's time to serve, heat them up in the microave and add your butter/milk/etc at that point.

  • Definitely reheatable. Also, we have Pyrex portable containers that come with the pack that you can heat in the microwave and everything stays REALLY warm.

I would just stick them in the oven with everything else a little bit before you're ready to eat though.

  • Argh! LOL My MIL thinks I can do no right so I was really hoping to keep them warm and yummy (I make a mean mashed potato) and not reheat them. Oh well! Thanks for the ideas and thanks cinciem- I may try that, too.

  • What about doing a mashed potato casserole instead of traditional mashed?

  • We use a crock pot every year. As long as you leave them on low it takes several hours for them to over cook. I would just make them fresh before your trip and give them a good stir when you get there and they should be fine. Good luck! : ).
