Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How often do you bathe your baby?

DS is ten days old.  His umbilical cord still hasn't fallen off.  SO he hasn't had a real bath yet.  We have been sponging him off and washing his hair every two to three days.  I feel like that is a long time between baths, but he isn't really dirty.  And he does not like his baths.  How often are you supposed to bathe a newborn?

Re: How often do you bathe your baby?

  • Our pedi recommends 2-3 times a week so the babies skin doesn't get too dry. With my dd when she was a newborn I did every day with my ds I try to every day but a lot of the time it ends up being every other day unless he has puked a lot that day.

  • sounds about right to me. that's how much i bathed DD when she was little. i know some people bathe their LOs daily but only use soap every 2-3 days so their skin doesn't dry out. i bathe DD every other day (Tuesdays/Thursdays/Sundays). but i wipe her face, hands, under her neck and between her toes everyday. it's not like babies really get dirty (unless they have a blow out or something)

  • Same here. Then I wipe her diaper area with a wet, warm cloth and let it air dry just to freshen up daily. I'll also wipe her face and hands daily. They can't really get too dirty at this point.

This.  We bathe DD 2-3 times a week but wipe down her face, hands, and feet, daily.  Until she starts moving around more she really doesnt get dirty.  If she has a lot of spit up or a blowout one day we will bathe her then.

  • Ive always heard different things. Our pedi said that as long as it doesnt look like her skin is drying out to feel free to do it as often as we want. Sometimes she gets one everyday and sometimes she goes a day or two, depending on if we have been out or just in the house.

This is what we do.  Sometimes everyday or every other day.  I started doing it at night and then doing a little lotion massage and pjs to create a bedtime routine about 2 weeks ago and it has worked out pretty good, but at 10 days old I was doing what you're doing.

  • I bath DD every other day or every 3 days. DS had dry skin when he was a baby and this is what I did with him to keep him from drying out.

  • Our LO came out with really dry skin, so we've only done once a week so far. He just had his first real bath today. Last week was just the sponge bath. I'm waiting for his skin to look better before increasing the frequency.
