Pilonidal Dimple

Does anyone's LO have this as well? DD is getting an ultrasound of hers done today.

For those of you who don't know, it's a dimple located above the anus. We call it her poop catch. I think they are pretty common.

Re: Pilonidal Dimple

  • Oh dear...an ultrasound?  Poor thing.  Are they worried about pilonidal cysts?  I had 3 of them before having an excision done when I was younger.  It was the farthest thing from fun ever.

Yes, that's what they are checking for. Did you have symptoms before the discovery of the cysts?

  • Yes.  My dip was higher than hers sounds.  TMI but mine was towards the top of the crack.  I didn't develop cyst until I was in middle school (EMBARASSING).  During sit-ups in PE I thought I was going to die.  Then the swelling starting putting a lot of pressure on my lower spine (coccyx) that made it hurt to walk.  Other than that...just general pressure/pain when sitting.

This, exactly! I have a dimple at the top of my crack. I *knock on wood* haven't had any cysts though.

  • DS has one. They noticed it when he was born. They said they wouldn't do an ultrasound since they could see the bottom (not very deep), where it was located, and he didn't have a birthmark or hair on it.  He has never had any problems with range of motion but I do have to clean it good if he has an icky poop.  At this point it is almost gone. Why are they just doing an ultrasound now?

  • I had a pilonidal cyst when I was about 15.  Terribly painful.  Couldn't even sit without being in pain.  I would have "flareups" a coupld of times, but then nothing and haven't had any problems since, that's been more than 20 years now.  For LO's they are looking to see that there isn't a spina bifida type thing going on.  However, if they were concerned about this it would have been done as an infant.  So if she's not having any problems, I  don't quite understand why they are doing US now.Good Luck
