OB/GYN in Concord, MA area?

I'm 4 weeks (yay!) and looking for a new Dr. I know I might be jumping the gun, but the OB's at my Dr's practice only deliver at Lowell General, and I'd like to deliver at Emerson - much closer to home. I've done some research online, but its hard to find reviews for the Dr's in the area, and I never know if I can trust them anyway. I prefer a female doctor, and I'd like to make an appointment right away - my Dr won't see me until 8 weeks! When I called to schedule, the receptionist told me I'll be dealing with mostly midwives...is that common??

Thank you!

  • One of my good friends delivered at Emerson and yes midwives are pretty common. That is what she went with and she was very happy with her midwife. If you decide to go in that direction let me know and I can get the name of the midwife for you. Their facility is very nice. I was impressed with the maternity rooms when we went to visit her after her delivery.

  • Yes - please! That would be great! Looking for any information I can get. Good to know about midwives too. Thanks so much!
  • Before I moved I was seeing a Ob/Gyn at Concord OB/Gyn and they're great.  A friend of mine delivered with them at Emerson and said it was fabulous.  The only downside I saw with them is that when you go into labor you get whoever is on call that day, not necessarily the person you've been seeing the whole time.

  • I had my daughter at Emerson with Concord OB/GYN and they were awesome!  It is true that they rotate who is on call so you don't know who you will have on the day, but they rotate who you see at each of your appts so you get to meet all of them beforehand.  When I was there 2 years ago they had 2 male and 2 female doctors and I honestly loved all of them.  Good luck!

  • Not sure if this is who you called, but I see Dr. Balcomb and I really like her, as well as two of the midwives, Sheri and Mitra, at AFA. If all is progressing normally, I think I might prefer a midwife, as I understand they will generally spend more time with a patient than a Dr. would.  I'm also a bit nervous, though, about not knowing who will actually deliver me.

Ditto all of this! I adore Dr. Bond. She was so wonderful through everything!

  • Hi,

Sorry for late reply. My friend saw Sherriann Perivolotis and she loved her. She had a somewhat high risk pregnancy due to a pre-existing health condition. Everything went perfect  though. Good luck!

  • I also see Dr Balcomb at AFA and they've recently hired 2 more midwives. It's been a good experience so far (I'm 35 weeks). The practice is very patient-centered, in one of the buildings at Emerson.

    Good luck!

  • I am 10 weeks, and have just started going to AFA at Emerson--I really like the fact that they have both midwives and an OB available, as I would ideally like to have a midwife at the delivery, unless I have to go with an OB.  I really love their facility, and they are very helpful.  They share office coverage with Concord OBGYN, so there is always someone on call at all times of the day or night when you call.  I love the facility at Emerson, which is why I chose to go with them.  If you are nervous about seeing a midwife, I would encourage you to do some more research--unless there are any serious complications, it has been proven there are far fewer interventions or surgeries in midwife deliveries, which is better for both you and the baby, not to mention saving everyone on healthcare costs!  There is a great documentary "The business of being born" that talks about some of these issues.  Good luck, and congrats!
  • Thanks for your response! I hadn't heard of AFA until this string. I just looked at their website and I'm planning on making an appointment today to check it out! I've read too many negative reviews about Concord OB/GYN. At first that's where I was leaning, but now I'm very interested in AFA. Thanks again! :)
