2nd time i went in for appt and md is in delivery!

okay, ladies... I realize that this comes with the territory. I know I can't expect my doctor to always be available as there are other women that need to deliver their babies... However, I went in for my 12 week appointment today and was told that the dr. i was supposed to see was in delivery and they weren't sure when she was going to be back- so i had to reschedule for two weeks from now. I think this would be a little less annoying if this hadn't happened once already- and I'm only 12 weeks! When I went in for my first appointment at 8 weeks, she got called into delivery as soon as I got there so I had to reschedule for the following week... Is this normal? It just seems strange to me that they have no back up plan- like there is no other doctor availble to cover appointments if one of them has to go into delivery?

That does seem a bit odd. It might be a good idea for you to consider just a family doctor that can see you full term or an ob or midwife, that way they can focus soley on your pregnancy and in your last months you'll meet the delievery doctors one on one anyway

Yeah that is what my husband said too... I guess i should've said too that she's actually not an md, she's a certified nursing midwife- one of 3 in the office and like 7 or 8 doctors. its just so weird...

That is why many ob/gyns work in group practices. Some of the drs. will be on l/d duty while others are on office duty.

I work in a practice so if one Dr. is out then I see another one. Same goes for if I'm in labor, the one on-call is the one who delivers my baby.

Thanks, ladies. I think the thing that I don't understand is that it is a group practice, so shouldn't someone else be available? Ultimately I really like the practice and I want to keep going there, and I should've asked more questions while I was there. I think i was too upset/disappointed because we were going to hear the heartbeat today and now I have to wait two more weeks! ugh.

It is normal. My first appointment was 2.5 hours long because I had to wait for dr to finish a delivery. Luckily, I was able to get all my labs done while I waited. At the practice I used to go to, there were 5 drs, so they rotated and only delivered on certain days, so you wouldnt be scheduled with one for an appointment if there was a chance they may need to deliver. The downside was that you never knew who would deliver you because of their rotation for deliveries.

My second appointment is today and I am 13 weeks.

thank you!! that is one thing i am thankful for- at least i know the same lady i will see my whole pregnancy will be available to me (as long as she is in town!) when i go into labor- regardless of whether the office has scheduled her appointments or not! part of me wishes I could have just waited- would have much rather sat in the Dr. office with DH than come to work... good luck on your appt!!

this might be "normal" but it would deffinately annoy me. im seeing a cnm and she works with a team of obs but she said that if she ever misses an appointment she will call personally as soon as possible. also, she will try to get me in the same week even if it be earlier in the morning or later in the evening than she usually schedules. i called and made an appointment with her the day after my bfp knowing that she only will take so many clients at a time and in each trimester. love her! good luck.

My Ob works in a practice but if you deliver during the day she will make an effort to be the one to deliver you. If you deliver at night when she's not on call, is the only time she doesn't deliver you. This way she delivers almost 80 percent of her patients. It has led to long waits before, but I was never rescheduled with my last pregnancy. I also only see for appointments during my pregnancy.

My OB delivers all of his own patients (unless he's already in surgery or something). If I get there for an appointment and he's at the hospital I am always given the option of waiting, seeing an NP, or rescheduling. I don't think it's too uncommon, but I'm surprised they don't give you any options besides rescheduling.

This is why I changed to a practice with multiple OB's.

I had two in the beginning (was trying to decide between a one Dr practice or multiple). I liked the idea of one, b/c he WOULD be there when I delivered. Well, one night of some blood I called both. The multi Dr practice had me in the next morning at 9, did blood work and an u/s. The single OB dropped my after hours call and didn't call back for 2 days.

I LOVE my 6 OB practice. I get in whenever I need to be seen. The after hours on call nurses are amazing. There is always a Dr (or more) available. And they are all awesome. I would be happy for any of them to be there when I go into labor.
