In what instance would a baby snow suit be used?

I was gifted a baby snow suit and even though it is adorable, I have a feeling it will never be used.

With the understanding that the baby can't wear it in the car seat, when would you put the baby in the suit? After you arrive at the outdoor activity? What activity would you be attending out in the snow with an infant?

I just want to see if this is something I should hold onto just in case or return to the store.

 TIA!

I was thinking something along these lines or if we are out back wanting to play with the dogs and it's chilly.  Obviously not freezing days but cold ones and time would still be very limited.

  • DD had one when she was born and it was only used for winter pictures like out at the reindeer farm and visiting Santa etc. Other than that it was pointless.

  • It probably depends on where you live.  I am from ND and I would never take out the baby in our winters but it might be nice in the spring if we are outside with our DS for awhile and have our DD bundled up in it.

  • We don't get a lot of snow here but I would say if you were going to be outside for an extended period of time when it was very cold out.

  • I was given one and returned it.  It was super cute but I just couldn't see myself using it.  If we take a walk on a cold day I will just bundle with extra blankets.

  • I have one that my mother had bought for me at a yard sale that has little openings for the harness on the carseat to go through and then it fastens over the harness, maybe you could get one like that instead but otherwise with the cover for the carseat I really don't see myself using it either.
  • For winter/early spring walks. It gets fairly cold here but as long as it is warmer than -15 c and not icy we'll get out and about for a little bit every day.

***And more importantly around here, we will keep the suit with us in the car in case of emergencies.

Those still aren't safe.  The snow suit can still compress in an accident and the baby can still be ejected from the seat.  All that hole will do is keep the snow suit in place.

A general rule of thumb is put the baby in, tighten the straps.  If you can't fit the baby in the seat in the seat without loosening the straps, it's too think to use, and can be dangerous.

OP-we had one fleece ones that rarely got used.  Only when we would be outside for extended periods of time.  We got a cover for the carseat (not a bundle me because those also interfere with the carseat straps), and that generally worked well.  We'd add blankets if needed.  If they gave you a receipt, I'd take it back.

  • What is with these baby snowsuits? I live in California and it snows maybe twice a year (and that rarely sticks), and yet I received two baby snowsuits - neither of which were actually baby sizes (one was 3-6mos, the other was 6-9... Apparently people think I'm going to have a very obese baby.) Oh, and the worst part is that neither have tags so I can't return them! Maybe they were given to the original owners as gifts and they've just been passed around... lol.

I think I will keep the smaller suit for cold walks, or if we go to the mountains, but the bigger suit definitely has to go.

  • With my first kiddo I would have returned it. I simply stayed inside if LO would be too cold w/o a snowsuit.

This time around, we have a snowsuit for LO since our toddler is OBSESSED with being outside. I know there will be times I have to bring #2 outside with me, either at the ice rink, playdates or just playing with the puppies and our son outside, so it's worth it. We also do a lot of snowshoeing while wearing the kiddos, so we need LO to be able to do that.

IMO, unless you are active outdoors, it's really not necessary.

  • I don't know what is available around you as I am from Canada. But I was given a covering for the car seat that is fleece and still allows for the bottom to be open to be put in the car, you then put the baby in and put this cover over top, opening so you can see the head. I also bought another one that is similar but thicker for when we go for walks and I have the car seat attached to the stroller. I have heard from a few friends that they are really great. Just dress baby warm inside then put this over!
