teething biscuit psa

this probably goes in the "duh" category but LO was thoroughly enjoying her teething biscuit today while we were watching tv and the next thing i know DH jumps up and has his fingers in her mouth.  apparently it broke off in the split second i looked away and she had a huge chunk in her mouth.  he got it out, but what could have happened scared me a lot.  i now know that i absolutely cannot even glance away if she's going to eat one.  ug.  if eel like the worst mom.

Re: teething biscuit psa

  • *lurking*. One of my scariest moments ever was when I was a nanny and the baby choked on a teething biscuit. It is amazing how fast it happens and how they instantly turn purple/blue. I was right with him too, sitting at the table with the highchair right next to me. Lucklily I noticed right away and was trained what to do. He was fine, but I think I was scarred for life. I don't think that my child will ever get a teething biscuit, not because they are bad but because I will be too afraid.

  • DD choked on one.  I am so glad I was at my parents house, she did cough at all.  My mom had to get a huge chunk out of her throat. We are not using them again.
  • its A shame bc she loves them but i really cant see giving her another.  awful.
  • Eeek!  I hate those biscuits...I have heard a lot of these stories.  I usually only give LO teethers or some other hard food to chew on....but I suppose there is a risk with anything....so don't feel bad.

  • I am always worried about that so I never give him the whole thing and break it in thirds. He does much better that way. Very scary. Glad your LO is ok.

  • Oh no, please think twice before reaching into their mouths to get something out.  We're doing BLW here, so we've had plenty of gagging moments....  which are super scary as the parent, but gagging (noisy spluttering, coughing, retching) isn't the same as choking (silent and panicky), and gagging is something they can and should work out on their own.  Sticking fingers in there risks pushing the food further back.  Our pediatrician said we should only use the baby heimlich, and even then only if she's actually choking (which we'd know because she wouldn't be able to cough and splutter, she'd be silent and in a full panic).

  • My DS gagged so many times on store bought teething biscuits that i won't buy them for my DD.  I did find an online tutorial on how to make your own.  it is SUPER easy and there is nothing really for them to choke on...My DD LOVES them.

  • I am a FTM so this whole thing is new to me. With that said, I'm not sure if this is a good idea, but can you put those teething biscuits in one of those mesh feeders to prevent choking?
