Feeding Schedule help please

My twin girls are almost a month old. My question is this, I have them on a every three hour feeding schedule during the day and then we push for 4 at night.

My question is this, if they are still sleeping past three hours during the day, should I wake them or hope they make it until four hours?

I thought I was told to keep them on three hours so they get more calories during the day, but thought I would see what other MOM's are doing.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Re: Feeding Schedule help please

  • I kept them on an every-three-hours (loosely) daytime schedule for the entire time they were nursing or on bottles. My reason at first was exactly what you said: I wanted them to get more calories into the day so they would sleep through the night. Then, after they started sleeping through, I didn't want to mess with it because I was terrified it would mess up the sleep, and also they seemed to want to eat every three hours, so I was never compelled to make an adjustment.

When I say "loosely," I mean that within a range of 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 hours, I'd sort of let them lead me. If they seemed hungry at 2 1/2, I'd go with it. If we were busy and it stretched out to 3 1/2, I'd go with it. In general it averaged out to about 3 hours. I never let it get to 4 hours.

  • I split the middle with a 3.5 hour feeding schedule. I wanted them to get their calories during the day, 7 feedings a day was all I could handle. Babywise says to keep them on every 3 hours until they are STTN and have dropped the dreamfeed. For us, we went to a 4 hour schedule at 5 months but continued the dreamfeed until 7 months or so because that worked better for us.

A MoM friend fed her girls on an every 4 hour schedule starting at probably 6 or 8 weeks and I'm not sure how or if it affected their nighttime sleep. I think a lot of that depends on your babies. I had one with reflux and, even though she could have gone every 4 hours pretty early on, probably, she couldn't get enough in a feeding and keep it down to make that work for us. Because if you move from an every 3 hour schedule to an every 4 hour schedule, you need to move those oz of formula to other feedings. Mine just couldn't hold that much down until she was a little older.

  • any time we let the boys go to 4 hours between meals in the daytime they slept horribly at night.... the longest we let them go was 3.5 hours - we'd wake them if it went that long. most of the time they woke right at 3 hours to eat so it wasn't a huge deal.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • We didn't get away from every 3 hours during the day until about 8 months. And we really had to load up the solids then. Otherwise, they sleep like sh*t.

  • I'm on the same schedule- 3 hours during the day and 4-5 during the night.  With DD, I was petrified of her confusing her days and nights, so I thought it was always important to wake her up for feedings during the day.  It worked out well for us, so I'm doing the same thing with the boys this time.
