Babies: 0 - 3 Months

losing my mind at night

DS (18 days old) slept all day yesterday... woke up when I put DD (2 years old) down for the night and was up until he started to look sleepy around 11PM. I started trying to put him down to sleep in his PNP at that time. I kid you not, we spent the ENTIRE night back and forth between my arms and his PNP every 20 minutes or so. I was thrown up on twice... totally lost my cool around 2AM and had DH hold him for an hour while I slept. Then it just continued after that. Around 4:30 DD woke up screaming and we tried to wait it out and let her go back to sleep... didn't happen. Around 5:30 she joined me in bed. I kept trying to get DS to sleep during this time with no luck.

Now come 6:30 AM and DS is just now finally sleeping in his crib. He has been sleeping for about a half hour which is longer than any stretch he did overnight. I can't even begin to express how frustrated I am. He sleeps sound as can be all day and is up all night. DH keeps saying DD was this way and we dealt with it then but the difference is now I have to get up and be bright eyed for my toddler at 6AM.

I'm at a loss for how to handle this. He's obviously going to be sleepy today after being up all night. What do you do? Try to wake him up every two hours or so?

Tonight we are going to try his crib instead of the PNP in our room. I'm going to make a bed on his floor and sleep in there so that if it is up and down again I won't have to go back and forth between the rooms. I'm also going to try just putting him in a sleeper rather than swaddling... that's how he sleeps so well during the day so maybe it will help at night.

Can anyone help?  Or at least tell me I am not alone :(

  • I am sure plenty of people would disagree with me but I would start waking him at the 3 hour mark to eat during the day. Bright lights, sit in the window, talk, read, music something. That whole sleep begets sleep BS obviously isn't working here.

  • You are not alone.

LO is the same and I'm crazy tired.  I hear eventually they start sleeping more and at times that are better for us.

Hang in there! It can't last forever (Can it??)

In this situation I would agree.

I'm not allowing him to sleep more than 3 hours straight during the day already.  Sometimes I wake him at 2 hours... maybe that's too early?  Either way when I do try to wake him during the day it is quite a chore... he's out cold!  I need him to be out cold at night :(

  • I struggled through something similar with my DS who is 28 days old.  Up and down all night long.  I don't have  a toddler to get up for though.  i haven't solved it yet, but one of the things i read on Dr. Sears yesterday was that baby wearing durring the day helps improve how some little ones sleep at night.  I do put DS in the carrier sometimes, but not everyday.  Going to try some carrier time this evening and see if it helps.  Theory is it settles them durring the day so they sleep better.

Mine does not sleep more than 2 hours at a time durring the day either and generally cat naps.  Although he is asleep now.  It also seems to be the gas that is waking my LO up.  He eats, is swaddled, falls asleep.  I put him down and about 15-20 mins after he eats the gas starts and wakes him up.  He squirms and sometimes works it out...but always is woken up by it.

  • DD did the same thing for a while there really early on!  I'm all for the making daytime seems like daytime thing - lights on, sounds, etc.  I'm sure it'll get better!  Good luck!

  • Is there a reason you are waking him up every two hours? I would let him sleep for three and see if that helps. If he is back to birth weight and has the right amount of wet and dirty diapers I would consider just letting him sleep as long as he wants. He may be fussy at night because he is not getting good sleep during the day.

  • 18 days is not that old so I think he might just have his days and nights confused still.  It took my LO about a full month to allow me to get any real sleep.  Now, he is almost 3 months old and he is sleeping like a champ (knock on wood)  Hang in there and just try to wake him up more during the day.  I promise that things will get better.
