Traveling w/ Little One(s)

We're going overseas in two weeks on a 6 hour flight, with an 18 month old and a 3 month old. I've gathered some traveling tips from some blogs, etc., but wondering if any of you have any? This could pertain to entertaining little ones, feeding them, or anything! :-)

Thanks!

Re: Traveling w/ Little One(s)

  • Flew with the twins at 5 months and all 3 when the twins were 18 months. 5 months wasn't bad except the crew didn't give me the time to get the carseat and all situation. I was trying to install it rear facing and they were yelling at me. Apparently you can't do that on a plane.

At 18 months, well it was a hellish 3 hour flight. Not sure what you plan to do about seats. A friend loaned me the flight harness, which they absolutely hated. I would have been better off just letting them sit in the seat. They completely freaked for take off and landing. For the return my friend told me to use lollipops. I'm not a fan of candy but it does quiet them down especially during take off and landing. I think DD had 3 in her mouth at the same time and I didn't care.

Hygiene-wise, keeping them "clean" is impossible. DD refused to wear socks or shoes (eew I know) and they were all eatting off the floor. I was outnumbered and couldn't do much about it. Dealing with the screamers took precedence. We had a terrible week long flu virus when we got home. I think I has PSTD when I got off that plane.

Luckily you have alot more time to get situated on an intl flight, however keeping them entertained for that long will be a challenge. The 18 month twins weren't horribly interested in the movie I brought for them. Toys, food and just pray that they sleep some.

  • We moved to Germany when S was 20 months old.  The flight went surprisingly smoothly, as he slept most of the way.  We let him walk around a the airport as much as possible before the flight to use up extra energy.  Also, we used our Ergo to carry him (and used the stroller to carry stuff to the gate - carseat, etc.)

Recently, I flew to the US on my own with S (3) and O (12 months).  It was exhausting, but went pretty well, all things considered.  I used a monkey backpack/leash for S, carried O in the Ergo and used the stroller to carry our carry-ons.

Take lots of food/snacks.  More than you think you'll need.  Variety is always good.  If you can get Ella's Kitchen or similar babyfood, they are GREAT for travel.  Bonus that older kids can sip them like a smoothie.

We've never had problems on take-off or landing.  I just nursed O while wearing him on the Ergo and O just sipped water.

Bring some new toys - even wrap them if you want.  Unwarpping something new is pretty exciting and the paper is one more toy. :)

Let me know if you have any questions - and you may also want to check out the International Nesties board. Where are you going, if I may ask?  Where ever it is, I bet you'll have a great trip!
