GD Moms

What's on your Thanksgiving menu?  We're hosting and I'm wondering what I'll be able to eat besides turkey and salad.  Any ideas?

Re: GD Moms

  • You get to have some carbs!  Don't completely cut them out.

Thanksgiving is a "GD holiday" for me a little bit.  I am allowed to be a little more indulgent, though I am still going to try and stick closer to my carb allowance instead of going nuts (as tempting as that is).  I will probably have small portions of mashed potatoes, stuffing, and a little bit of cranberry sauce (that is my big indulgence!).    I have to check, but I think a 1/2 cup of mashed potatoes = 2 carb servings.  I can have three servings with my meal, so I'll probably go with under 1/2 cup, so I can fit in the stuffing and cranberry.  If I go over, it might be on a little bit of sweet potato casserole.  Other than that, I will be having turkey, salad, and green beans with a lovely glass of sparkling ice water (I'm going to miss that glass of cider)!  I also have to adjust my insulin dose for the meal (they said just do it like I am going out to eat, which is 2 more units than my normal dose).

Oh...for dessert, I am making baked apples - they taste like apple pie without the crust!  I will wait awhile after the meal (and probably after testing to make sure my sugars aren't too high).  I make the baked apples with only the littlest bit of brown sugar mixed with cinnamon and walnuts, so I just have the carb serving for the apple and the walnuts for some protein.  If my numbers are doing okay, I might add a small scoop of ice cream (1/2 - 1 carb serving) since I can have 1 1/2 carb servings for my snack.

  • I'm going to eat everything my family is eating, just in smaller portion sizes.  I plan on having turkey, a little scoop of mashed potatoes, 1 crescent roll, and a veggie.  I will have a small piece of pie as long as my meal numbers are okay :o)

  • You should be able to have a little of almost everything as long as you watch your overall carbs (and take a walk!)

Turkey, some gravy, a little mashed potatoes & stuffing, green bean casserole, salad or other veggies.

I'll probably avoid (or cut way back on) the rolls/bread, cranberry sauce, the marshmallows on the sweet potatoes, etc.

I think my dietician gives me a free meal, but I'm too conscious of it, so on some level I still try to eat better.

I might make a GD-friendly cheese cake for dessert.

  • My endocrinologist said to go ahead and cheat on Thanksgiving, that one day wasn't going to matter.  I'm going to cut out the carbs I don't care for, like mashed potatoes and sweet drinks, but not count the carbs either, and have scalloped potatoes and a piece of pie for my nighttime snack.
  • I'm going to be making an extra veggie side dish (Provincial vegetable casserole) that is a "good" food but sounds really yummy. Going to enjoy turkey and the usual veggies, salad and will have a teensy bit of mashed potatoes and a forkful of sweet potatoes. I'm going to attempt making fresh cranberry sauce with Stevia if I can find a recipe to take the sugar out. I've decided I am not making a dessert out of protest, and if anyone wants something, then they can just bring it themselves! :P Very grown of me, I know, but dessert is usually something I ask people to bring and I always make something so usually have too much anyway.

Those baked apples sound great! I may just make that if I have the strong urge to have dessert.

Also, a new indulgence I found is an unsweetened White Chocolate seltzer. I got it in the supermarket and its a little odd, but leaves the after taste of cream soda in your mouth. DH doesn't like it, but he also doesn't like cream soda, and I love it!

I'll really miss not having wine, but a fellow MTB will be at the dinner with me so we can throw a pity party together and throw things at people when we feel bitter ;)

  • I am really confused on whether to follow my diet on Thanksgiving or eat what I want but with moderation.  My obgyn told me that I must follow my guidelines on Thanksgiving after scolding me for having 1 cupcake at my shower which was in my allotted eat time and all I ate.  But my Endo told me that I am allowed to eat cupcakes as long as I eat them at snack time rarely and exercise.  I am also allowed one day a week splurge if we go out to eat.  She told me to eat my Thanksgiving dinner my numbers are always fine (under 100).  I don't understand why I am getting two different answers.  I assume I will do the safest for lil baby since (due to my history) he could arrive at anytime and I'd hate to have splurged on the day he is going to arrive causing him unneccessary time in the NICU.  I hope he's here by Christmas so I can eat then.  Thanksgiving is my favorite food holiday though.  :(

It sounds like the OB might be a little old school or purist in the GD diet mindset. The thing is, a carb is a carb is a carb!  Whether it is a cupcake or a slice of wheat bread.  If you can fit it within your guidelines, you are golden.  If you have a splurge day, it is not the end of the world!  Your endo is managing your diabetes.  I would go with their recommendations here.

As for the OB, are they worried about sugar issues if you splurge the day LO arrives or are they just strict about GD in general?  Blood sugars tend to normalize during the physical labor, so even those on insulin don't tend to need it during labor.  Your LO should be just fine.

For Thanksgiving, I would keep your guidelines in mind, but not stress about it.  Drink plenty of water.  Go for a walk.  Keep an eye on your sugars with your testing.  And enjoy the day!
