VERY cool video monitor!!

This isn't in the baby store and I have no idea how I came across it but this Lorex Video Monitor is really cool! You can view the feed over the internet so if you're away from home you can see LO, you can record the video, and you can use it as a security system if your on holiday! I can see my cat when we are away! I am seriously considering this rather than the usual baby monitor. What do you think? Is there a drawback that I am not seeing? I have to decide fast since it's $100 off.  I wish there were more reviews.

Re: VERY cool video monitor!!

  • First I'd want to know if it's encrypted so there's no interference. I saw a story (on 20/20 or dateline) about video monitors and how people could see their neighbor's child on their monitor, etc. In the story they drove around the neighborhood and were able to pick up images of children in various houses.

I'd also assume it could be hacked if it's not encrypted, especially if you can access it via internet (thought I'm not sure). I see it says "private and secure," but I don't see any detailed information on that.

Next, does it stay on 24/7? Will it go to "sleep" and come on/alert you if the child moves or makes noise?

Also, it says it's out of stock. If I knew it was encrypted and would go to sleep when not active, then I'd consider it.

Good questions. I am going to try and find info on the Lorex website.

Please post an update to this. I'm very interested in this product and I'd really like to know if it is encrypted and whether it goes to sleep when not active.

  • I pre-ordered the Summer Infant one that does the same thing because it'll serve a different purpose than our Baby Touch. The SI one comes out in January. I like the monitor on all night, so whenever I glance at it I can see what position the baby is in. I would not want it to go off just because the baby isn't making noise, so I hope the SI one doesn't go off.

I don't know about encrypted and safe from crazy hackers, but any digital monitor (which this is) is safe from interference and someone being able to drive by and pick up your monitor.

Not necessarily. Please read the article.

That article actually confirmed what I said. You can't accidentally stumble on a digital video monitor's frequency. The radio frequencies they are talking about are an issue with the analog monitors. Like I said, a crazy hacker could still get to your feed if they were actively looking for it, but honestly, if someone is going to that much trouble to watch your baby they could probably find a way around an encrypted feed anyway.
