Trouble TTC

When to look for help?

Hello ladies,

I was wondering if you could share some of your experiences with me. I am on month 11 of trying and was wondering when you all first went to your doctor for help, and did you go straight to an RE? I know it can take a year and I don't want to be impatient but if we do have a problem I want to address it ASAP.  I really do appreciate any advice you can give me.

Thanks!

Re: When to look for help?

  • I waited till exactly 12 cycles...but I just to happened to have a pap that month.  I also happened to be on CD 3 at that appt and requested bloodwork.  My OB/GYN set me up with CD 3 b/w, 7DPO b/w, an HSG, and a SA for MH.  At that time we also discussed RE recs and I called and made an appt that day.

So, we had a decent amount of testing done before I ever went to see my RE.

  • I don't think 11 months is being impatient.  I would go ahead and make an appointment.  Chances are once you get and appt and get all your testing done you will be past the year mark which is usually the standard for those under 35.  I would suggest possibly going to an OB (if you are OOP because its cheaper) to get your testing started but would not do any treatments with an OB.  REs are much better at monitoring properly and really just knowing what to do to get you KU.

    Good luck!

  • Right at 1 year, my gyno referred me to an RE (who happened to be his son-IL.)  I think 11 months is close enough to go ahead and look at testing.  Good luck.

  • All the ladies are correct...it's usually a year.  Because my annual with my OB was at month 9 (cycle 11) of trying she suggested we get a few of the tests "out of the way" over the next three month until we hit the *year* mark.  We did one test a month, the last of which was my husband's S/A - which is where our issue lays mainly.  So she immediately said "You probably won't be able to get PG without help so I'd start seeing an RE now.  Good luck."  Fairly bad bedside mannor for a phone call if you ask me, but still I am happy she got us the test before we hit that year officially.

  • We hit our "12 cycles" after only 10 months so I felt like I was being impatient and thought I'd wait 2 more months. Well, cycle 13 we got a bfp, then m/c. When I went to my OBGYN for my m/c apts I told her we had been through 13 cycles and she gave us a referral to our RE. Then we couldn't get my beta down to zero. We finally made it to our RE's on month 14, so not bad. I think 11 months is enough time to start your testing but be advised your OB may make you wait that extra month (and so may your insurance in order to cover it all). Good luck!

  • Thank you ladies. It's been frustrating! I hope to get to know you all better through this process, and good luck to all of you too.
  • I had a Mirena for 3 years and no periods while on it. 7 months after having it removed when I still wasn't cycling on my own I asked for testing to help determine why I wasn't ovulating.  So about 8 months in we did testing for both of us, and the HSG and then started Clomid at the beginning of this month (9 months after Mirena removal).  If I had even one period on my own without provera I probably would have waited longer to meet with my doctor about treatment, but something was clearly not right so I decided to be proactive.

I vote be proactive if you sense something isn't right. Charting helped me see how strange my body was acting.  My first two cycles were 100 and 70 days long (ended only because of provera).  Not normal!  I am doing 3-4 cycles with my obgyn and then moving on to an RE.

  • It was a little different for me because my Gynecologist (since I was 22) *thought* based on lack of periods, weight gain, acne, etc that I had PCOS. So I knew that when it was time to TTC, that we would probably need help.

When I went for my annual in February 2011, we had been trying since July 2010, my Doc decided to set us up with a referral to my current RE. We started testing and got things in order over the next few months. Then it took a little while to get my husband on board with starting treatments. He was hesitant until we hit the 1 year mark to do anything. But since blood work showed no ovulation, I knew we weren't going to get anywhere. So just after the year mark, we decided together it was time to get treatment.

Sorry this is a little long! I don't think you are being impatient at all. Good luck!

Im kind of like this...I went off BCP in March but havent even gotten one natural period, so I went to the doc to see what's up and was diagnosed with PCOS.  Knowing I have a diagnosis, I am definitely NOT waiting a year just to "see what happens."  I started on meds in August, and we will go back to the doc to discuss Clomid next month.

If I were you, and everything seems semi-normal, I'd probably schedule an OB appt for a month from now...

  • I spoke to my OB at month 11 and she recommended a couple RE practices.  Since I don't need a referral with my insurance, I just called the RE then and made an appointment.  I was able to get my first appointment a few weeks out and did my initial testing in what would have been month 12 and 13.  It worked out well for me since I was able to move into treatments not long after my year of trying.  I don't think its unreasonable to make a phone call at month 11 if you're ready to move on.  Good luck!

  • Due to me knowing about some health issues that DH has and does still have, I went to see an RE after 6 months of trying. I was told I was too early, but I am glad I went. We found out about my DHs SEVERE MFI at that point. It is almost medically impossible for us to get pregnant on our own, so I am happy I was inpatient. Sometimes it's worth it!

  • I went to my OBGYN at about 14 months (first appt available with my schedule) and she ordered my testing. We met with the RE a little over a month later.

I got lucky that I was in a good place in my cycle when I saw the OB, so all the testing was able to get done quickly and we had results by the time we saw the RE.

    EDIT: wrong numbers

  • We started looking into RE's and talking to our docs at 10 months, after a m/c. We actually got the referral, started testing, seeing the RE, etc. at 14 months (longer than I wanted, but I had to go from gen. prac. to OB/GYN, then to RE, and they both kept telling me I was young, and just needed to relax and wait. Yeah...not seeing them anymore). A year is the general guideline for under 35, so I don't think 11 months is to early to start putting out feelers :)
