For those who swaddled

If you swaddled your LO how and when did you stop or are you still swaddling?

We had read and watched The Happiest Baby on the Block during my pregnancy and thank God, because Easton does not sleep without being swaddled. This includes naps too. He wasn't always swaddled for naps though, just recently.

I wanted to stop swaddling at 3 months because he's gotten the aden and anais swaddling blanket over near his face at night and it worries me. Then I tried a Kiddopotamus swaddler and last night he woke up screaming  even though he slept in it fine the previous night. So then I tried to see if he'd sleep unswaddled and he would not sleep to save his life.

His bedtime is around 6-6:30 but he didn't sleep until 11pm when I reswaddled him with his the aden blanket. I guess he's not ready yet to sleep unswaddled and I'm fine with that, but when will it stop?

Re: For those who swaddled

  • My LO is a preemie and has a strong Moro reflex so we are still swaddling. I suspect we will keep swaddling until about 6 months at night. We swaddle with the Halo Swaddler Sack thingy and she seems fine. We don't swaddle with blankets anymore as she busted out of those although I do use the waffle knit blankets for a loose swaddle for naps during the day. I love the stretch of those.

  • My LO is 3 1/2 months and we still swaddle DD for the night, and most of the time for naps. We keep her arms out- she's always preferred that. For us, swaddling is part of the "time to go to sleep" routine. I am curious to see what other people say also. I would like to move her into the sleep sacks, but I'm not sure if she'd sleep as well.

  • Funny you posted this because last night I decided to try letting my LO sleep unswaddled.  Didn't work and now I'm EXHAUSTED!  She fell asleep around 11pm (normal time for her) but was up every hour until about 3am when I swaddled her and then she fell fast asleep until about 7am.  Usually she sleeps from 11am until 7am when she's swaddled.

  • I swaddled in the first couple of weeks with the halo sleep sack/swaddle sacks. I started to become concerned though b/c they seemed too big and would sometimes ride up over his nose. Once he outgrew the regular baby blankets I had to swaddle him in I sort of stopped. That was probably around 6-8 weeks. Now that I'm transitioning him out of the RNP and into the PNP I've started using just sleep sacks w/o the swaddle. I have just been firm about making the transition but he also seems to be ready for it.

  • He just slept for 8 hours straight! Wow, I definitely need to  continue swaddling. Too bad I cant say the same for me since Ii have to get up and pump.

And he just fell back asleep again!

  • My LO is 13 weeks old. He has slept in the Halo sleep sacks swaddled since we came home from the hospital.  Lately he has figured out how to remove his arms by morning time. And since he has discovered his hands and fingers and loves sucking on them, that is what he is doing in the morning.  As of 2 nights ago we have stopped swaddling with his arms in the halo sleep sack.  So far he hasn't woken up yet in the middle of the night. I assumed that because he was breaking free by morning he wants his arms out.

  • We use the Halo sleep sack.  So far so good, DS has been sttn since 6 weeks.  DH is starting to get worried about DS breaking out because of how strong he is, and how much he is moving around by the morning.  I'm not ready to let him sleep with his arms out!  I like my sleep!

  • My LO is 3 months and we still swaddle. He's been STTN (8-10 hours straight in his crib) and I'm not ready to give that up yet! He seems to have no interst in rolling over any time soon so I'm not too worried about that. I figure I'll keep doing it until he starts busting out of them on a regular basis. We use the Halo Sleep Sack
  • I just started swaddling to do the RNP to crib transition.  He sleeps pretty good in the blanket for naps and the swaddle sack for bedtime.  I'm not in a hurry to unswaddle because he's sleeping so well (10-11 hrs at night)

  • So, we swaddled, and our LO loved it, and slept great.  About a 2 weeks ago, she started scooting all around the crib, and we have a crib wedge in there, and she was kind of scooting sideways on it, and rolling down.  I went in there, and she had the swaddle blanket over her face, and had rolled down the wedge on her side, but was almost face down, and it totally freaked me out!!!

We went cold turkey off the swaddle right then and there.  Not the best decision, she can barely get her self down to sleep.  We have taken to wearing her in the moby (which is just like a swaddle)....to get her to sleep, and then putting her in the crib.

I don't know if we are doing the right thing, but I am too freaked out to swaddle her again.

  • LOVE Happiest Baby on the Block!

DS has slept 10 hours straight every night since we swaddled him (white noise too) so I ain't about to stop any time soon.

  • We use the swaddlestrap from annaandeve.com. It is a miracle worker. He had outgrown all his swaddle blanket and always sweats through the Halo one (and gets out of it). We are down to one arm being swaddled now, and he'll be 4m tomorrow. I don't see us stopping until he is in the crib and can roll. Currently he is in the RNP and won't stay on TT long enough to even try to roll.

Question: What is the point of swaddling with the arms out? Isn't the point to keep the arms from flailing?

  • We were swaddling from the beginning (first in a blanket then swaddleme) and LO did fine. She was not STTN but I don't think the swaddle had anything to do with it. Then about 2 weeks ago she started rolling over to her belly so we stopped swaddling cold turkey. At night she does pretty well (6-9 hours on average), but has a tougher time with naps. During the day when she is not swaddled, she often startles herself awake, or will roll over and then whine that she is on her belly... So sometimes we still swaddle her arms during the day. I am not worried because I am not asleep and check on her very frequently.

  • DS will be 4 months tomorrow! Wow...just realized that. Anywho..we swaddle with his feet sticking out. He used to kick the swaddle loose, so it was just a thought we tried. We cannot get him to sleep without having his arms tied down, though. I'm going to do it as long as we can find things to wrap hiim up with.
