NBR An adult throwing their own bday party

In a few weeks is a party for one of our friends, 29th bday. Every year this couple throws their own bday parties, and lots of ppl come. Everyone brings presents and usually this person will sit there and open them in front of everyone. Everyone sings for the cake, etc..

As an adult, year after year I find this weird. H did throw me a huge surprise 30th bday, but other than that my mom usually cooks a bday dinner for me, or H and I will go out and do something fun.

This year im just not feeling it, and we will not be going. Am I the one being weird? Are bday parties with tons of gifts normal?

  • That is very strange. I think I'd bring a bottle of wine or something (more like a hostess gift) than actual boxed birthday gift.

  • I don't think a party is weird if it's just another excuse to congregate with food and liquor and stuff.  But presents other than food or liquor for a non-milestone birthday after you hit the teens is bizarro.

  • Hey hey hey - I pretty much threw myself a 30th birthday party. I didn't request gifts but people brought them. I didn't open them in front of everyone - some I opened in front of the gift-giver others I just didn't open until later. I told most of my friends & family I was preggo at this shin dig.

I also had a party for my 31st but called it a Memorial Day weekend bbq and told everyone it was not a birthday party and not to bring gifts. It was an excuse to show JT off in his sexy shark bathing suit, rash guard, and hat! My H did have a cake for me though (even though I didn't want one).

  • Oh, and full disclosure, I totally make my H get me an ice cream cake for my birthday. lol.

  • I can see for planning something for 21 or 30, but every year seems a bit much. I like the idea of bringing a bottle of wine or something.  That is a very good idea. Hopefully no one notice when she sits there and opens the gifts that I didnt bring something. lol

I know what you mean MrsLynnD, I think a reason for a get together is always nice. I just think a FB invite with 50 ppl is a little over the top.

and LOL Broc, I get a cherry chip cake every year with vanilla frosting. That is mandatory.

  • I picture a bunch of adults wearing pointy party hats and playing pin the tail on the donkey.  That's what you're doing, right?

That is strange.  I don't think I would go.  I mean, the party is fine.  But the present opening is weird.

  • WTF! byob and a potluck plus gifts? Hello rude and selfish. I wouldn't go either. DH's best friend and his wife have their birthdays 2 days apart. They throw a big birthday party together every year. It's byob but they bbq and provide all the food and no one is expected to or does bring gifts. I think it's fine to do something like they do, which is basically just an excuse to get together with friends and party. I do not agree with a big AW bash that's all about your guests spending money.
