Multiples

? from an outsider re: presents for twins

Is it best to buy each infant or toddler twin the same present?  Essentially giving the household a double toy.  Or a different present for each child?  I was just curious if parents of multiples had an opinion or preference either way.

  • don't have kiddos yet, but we always give books, and we know that we will always ask for books, we are book people! great for sharing, and great for family time.

  • It really depends on the gift.  Let's say you are buying for 3 year old twin girls.....you could buy each twin her own baby doll to play with but they could share one toy like the baby furniture like the bassinet, stroller (they may fight), changing table, highchair set.  My experience my girls like to have their own toy.  You can do completely different but one toy maybe completely appealing to both of them and my cause a fight.  I will buy same toy for each but do a different color.  Really just depends on what you are thinking.

  • There's really no "right or wrong" with this IMO, and it'll depend on the kids' ages, their personalities, sexes, and the toys themselves.  Some things my kids share, some things I prefer to have doubles of, and most things it really just doesn't matter much.
  • I've appreciated the sets of toys etc. that I've gotten that are similar but in a different color, or different design, or whatever. I think it's nice for them not to have all the exact same things, and if they are both fighting over one toy you can always go get another of the same. Just what I think but my twins aren't here yet, so maybe I'm naive! :)

  • I was actually asked advice on this from somebody else.  I had no idea and said maybe she should ask the parent.  But it got me curious so I thought I would ask here.

  • I don't have twins, but I struggle with this as my niece and nephews are triplets. I usually buy the boys the same thing, but with a slight variation. This year, they are getting remote controlled robots, but each robot is different. I usually get something completely different for my niece now that they are 8. Although one year I got them a large easel and art set to share.

ETA: My sister-in-law prefers that they receive similar but not identical gifts and no more shared gifts.

  • I agree that it depends on the gifts. Like birthday gifts my boys have received are they each got a Mr. Potato Head from one family, or they each got a Tonka truck (but one a dump truck and one a garbage truck) from another family, etc. I agree that bigger toys--the type that you really only need one of per family--can be shared.
