NT3: Any advice about Hawaii?

DH has a conference on the big island in three weeks and I get to tag along! Has anyone been there? Anything we can't miss? Any tour/ boat/other recommendations for vendors/operators?

TIA

  • I've been to Maui twice but never the big island... I'd highly recommend taking a long drive around as much of the island as you can - just SEE how beautiful the landscape is and drive through some of the small villages.  We took a helicopter tour with Blue Hawaii and I'm pretty sure they operate on multiple islands.  Drink something fruity and frozen for me! :)

  • Hi! I was on the big island three years ago, and loved it. Snorkel. As much as you can. My favorite think we did was a snorkeling trip. You pay a company, they take you to a state park underwater on a boat, you jump off and snorkel. I think it was captain hook park or something like that?! Wouldn't miss it for the world. I also loved volcano national park. We hiked all over it, then took a helicopter tour. It was amazing. Have a blast!

  • Which side of the island are you staying on, HIlo or Kona?  Definitely go to Volcanoes National Park.  Also check out the black sand beach,Punalu'u.  Beautiful waterfalls on the Hilo side, Akaka, Raibow, etc.  If you're on the Kona side, you can go snorkeling at Captain Cook right from the shoreline.  If you have a jeep, drive to the top of Mauna Kea (although your rental contract may forbid it).  Have fun!!
