Most of the 6 month old babies we hang with aren't yet. DS will sit for a few seconds, but then he falls over. I had 4 babies in my house yesterday between 6 and 7 months and only 1 was sitting unassisted. He's also army crawling, while the other 3 are just rolling to get around.
DS can sit for ages - like an hour or more - unassisted. The thing is, he can't get there himself. He falls forward or sideways to get out of sitting and then can roll belly to back, but it's very slooowww motion. He can't roll back to belly and isn't crawling in any sense yet.
We're trying not to freak out about it. We knew that developmental delays were possible since they were 6 weeks early. Our early interventionist has been working with us, so hopefully it will happen soon
DD is almost 6 months (on the 28th). She is able to sit unassisted for 20+ minutes. She also crawls and can, as of the last 4 days, get into a sitting position by herself. She crawls backwards until one leg is in front of her, then uses her arms to push herself to sitting. But I know that this is pretty early for that. I think it's because she's small (14#), so she has less mass to get moving.

My LO turned 6 months yesterday. He is sitting unassisted for 20+ minutes at a time. Yesterday was cute -- he sneezed and it just about knocked him over, but he was able to right himslef after quite a bit of wobbling :-)
I am actually amazed that he is doing so well with sitting so early. He has been "slow" to reach all the other milestones -- he just started rolling over regularly about 4-5 weeks ago, and still doesn't do belly to back very often. He is nowhere close to being able to get up on his knees and he doesn't army crawl anywhere. When he's on his tummy, he still is just lifting hid head and chest up. But if we put him in the sitting position, he is very happy/content to sit and play with toys in front of him.
My LO can sit on his own for maybe two minutes at the most. 15 seconds is the norm. I don't really know if that is considered unassisted. He tends to lunge for toys and topple over, so I am always behind or beside him.
He does have an "off the charts" head, so I think it's going to take him a while to master this skill.

My DS wasn't at this point either, but he was pushing up on all fours, rocking back and forth and rolling all over the place. He walked at 10 months.
My DD is doing exactly what he did. I think sitting unassisted for long periods of time, at this point is rare, just like walking at 9-10 months old is.
The problem is EVERYTHING distracts her so as soon as she gets distracted, she just falls over. So she can sit if there are no people, no sounds, no talking, no motion.
However, she is a rolling queen; and is determined to crawl.
I think she is more interested in moving than sitting still...she constantly moves!
It's also funny to me. Mostly because V can sit forever, and can now put herself in a sitting position. But God forbid she ends up on her back. She skipped rolling from back to front. So she just lays there, contracting her abs to get back up! She can't figure out how to roll to her side and get up that way. She's like a turtle!

Mine is doing it unassisted. It does only last for a little bit then she falls, rolls, plays then sits again.
all babies are different. first it is their legs then they learn to try balance with their arms.
It will happen.

My DD is sitting unassisted, but usually plays with her feet and stops concentrating on sitting and ends up falling over by the 5 min. mark!
This is my DD too.

I'm not worried that DS isn't sitting unassisted yet. I'm just being nosy about all of your babies
They have the rest of their lives to be sitting, crawling, etc. I'm ok if he stays this way for awhile longer still!
Mmmm...cake!
I put SS.

Nope. She gets closer everyday, but not now.
