Solids on the go

DD turns 6mo next week and we have finally been successfully ingesting a decent amount of solids for about 2 weeks now. It has not replaced BM meals so now I don't know what do to when we need to be out for a 'solid' feeding. For instance, I usually do a solid meal at the 11ish feeding and we will be at church then, or I'm trying to go to coffee next week during this time. I feel like there's an obviously easy answer that I'm just not seeing. Should I change up the schedule and just do a full bottle for that feeding and solids a different time? Right now she's eating a tablespoon or two of oatmeal and a fruit/veggie. The fruit/veggie seems ok because it's in a container, but the oatmeal/BM concoction seems difficult. Any suggestions? She's such a messy eater that I don't see how its realistically possible.

Re: Solids on the go

  • I'd just do solids at another time of day. Solids aren't really for nutrition at this point - it's more important to make sure enough formula/breastmilk goes in than to worry about a bit of oatmeal one way or another.

I have been offering solids every meal we eat at home. If I'm out, I offer a bit of whatever I'm having if it's appropriate and skip if it's not. I need to throw some mum-mums in the diaper bag - he loves those and they travel well.

  • we just mix it up/ heat it up before we go out and by the time she eats it is still warm and she is fine. weird thing... my daughter is a cleaner eater when we are out than when she is at home.

eventually you will have to travel with food, starting now will teach you and her how to eat out of the home. you could just bring a bottle too.

  • I just skip that feeding and offer solids later on.  Tomorrow, rather than feed her around 10 when we're in church, I'll just try after her 1 pm feeding instead.
  • I'd say just skip the cereal and bring a container of fruit/veggie.

  • We offer organics in a jar on the go. I also find that he's more distracted if we're not home, so I carry some of his favorites - apples or squash and find a quieter place to feed if possible.

If we're really having problems we will just have a bottle and then maybe solids for a snack at a later time.
