Can I Change My Scheduled CSection Date?

Hey Moms! :)

Ok so my csection is scheduled for the 28th, and my sister is coming down from school for Thanksgivin Break, but wont be here to spend time with the baby or help my granparents (busy people) watch my 2yr old son while im in the hospital. She leaves the morning i have my csection. Is there any way i can reschedule it for next week sometime instead of the 28th? Should i call my doctor and ask?

P.S.

I have a OB Appt on the 22nd.

Re: Can I Change My Scheduled CSection Date?

  • I have no actual experience, but from what I know from other people, unless they have a reason to, they do scheduled c-sections after 39 weeks, so I don't know that they'd willingly move yours up a week.

  • In most states, doctors cannot schedule c-sections for earlier than 39 weeks without medical reason without facing review from the medical board.  They schedule them for 39 weeks for the health and benefit of your baby.  Having had all of my previous three children before the 39 week point, via c-section, I can say that each delivery has had fears of respiratory problems before the baby has been born.  C-section babies face additional issues at birth as you probably know like not being able to squeeze fluid out etc, causing pneumonia in some causes (as it did with my 37 week baby last time).  Not to be preachy but I wouldn't want to risk it if I didn't need to have the surgery earlier than I had to (except obviously for medical reasons).

  • Well, assuming the earliest you can even ask is Monday, the earliest you'd be able to have the surgery is Tuesday, which puts you in the hospital till at least Friday if not Saturday.  So you wouldn't be able to celebrate Thanksgiving with your family, which would kind of stink.  This is why I'm glad my c/s is scheduled the week after next - yeah, DH's sister and oldest brother have to leave before their nephew is born, but they'll get to see him at Christmas, and I get to enjoy Thanksgiving weekend with our family.  Plus, as previous posters pointed out, you might not even be allowed to do it before 39 weeks anyway, and personally I want my baby to cook as long as possible.

  • I'm pretty sure only your doctor can answer this for you.
  • My dr and hospital will not do a c-section sooner than 39 weeks unless medically necessary. I have total placenta previa and I am scheduled for my c-section for 39 weeks 6 days just incase the new due date that moved me up a week is wrong. They have really cracked down on scheduling elective c-sections.
