I'm so sad for your family's loss. I'm sure CPS is aware that it was an accident but it's a formality that has to be undertaken, as there are parents out there who are truly negligent (as opposed to the tragedy of your family's case). Hopefully that part will be resolved soon.

ETA: as "routine" as it is for CPS to be involved, I think it's pretty crappy of them to make them deal with this so soon. That sucks

Oh my heart just aches for everyone. I cannot even imagine the pain as a parent. They have been in my thoughts and prayers since you first posted and I was really hoping she would somehow be okay. When I got on here to post late last night and didn't see an update I was praying that no news was good news. That is just such a tragic story and definitely a reminder for the rest of us. They will probably forever be in my thoughts and prayers.

CPS and their local police are still investigating and BIL had to spend hours of her last day giving statements and re-creating the accident at home for the police. I think he has paid the ultimate sacrifice for this tragic accident. Please don't step away from your kids for even a second when they are around water.

On behalf of the law enforcement community, let me say I am SO SO sorry that he has to go through this. I know it completely sucks and I wish there was an easier way to handle these things. The very unfortunate part of this job is that the bad guys who intentionally harm children have f*ed things up for the rest of us loving, law-abiding parents who are faced with a tragic, tragic accident. I hope he is being treated with all the compassion and empathy he deserves because you are right - this was an accident and he has already paid the ultimate sacrifice. Prayers are still with him and your entire family.
