Completely un-baby-related: Christmas!

It's almost here!  Time to start baking and getting things ready...  between work and getting ready for baby, though, it feels like there's not enough time!  Since we're trying to save some money before baby arrives, Christmas is going to be pretty bare this year, but I've got a few homemade gift projects on the go!

I just finished knitting Canucks slippers for my BIL, dishcloths and towels for hubby's best friend, and I've got all kinds of other things to make and bake...  It's especially busy for baking this year, because sis and I are both Celiac, so we'll be making all our own tarts and cookies and other goodies!

What is everyone else doing for Christmas?  How are you getting ready?  Have you started yet?

Happy Holidays!

PS: We got our first snowfall last night, so I'm feeling the Holiday Spirit...

Re: Completely un-baby-related: Christmas!

  •    No huge plans for Christmas. We will be staying home this year. Looking forward to it just being the 3 of us... We too, would like to save a bit of money during the holiday season, since we will soon have little one home with us, and I am on Mat Leave. We will be buying for the kids in our family(nieces and nephew) and a couple things for LO(mainly things we need for him/her). I may treat DH with a nice new shirt and a pair of jeans, other then that I will try my best to be artsy and pass out greeting cards with a family pic.

As for the baking, my mom is flying in next week and I know we will be doing some baking together. The usual "family cookies" and probably some muffins. We may do a fresh apple pie or something, but we mainly do cookies this time of year. Also a tortiere or two (keeping my fingers crossed). It has not stopped snowing around here in, oh say 48 hours almost. So it is definitely time to start decorating. Better to start now then wait and only have our Christmas decorations out for 3 weeks. All that hard work, I'd sure love to admire it a little.

Haven't pulled out the Christmas tree yet, or x-mas lights but soon. Especially if I have to try and juggle a new born and decorate. Maybe once this blizzard stops, Hubby and I will try and tackle some "tis the season lighting". As for the the Christmas music, I'm not quite ready for that. Maybe another week or two.

  • Holy cow, talk about snow!  We've had a lot in the last couple days, too.  Probably not as much as you, but it's enough to make me want to stay home until it melts away!

Sounds like you have a few busy weeks ahead of you!  My sister and I always loved doing the Christmas baking with our mom; butter tarts, sugar cookies, wheat germ cookies and chocolate caramel squares!  The butter tarts have always been my favorite...  I kept doing butter tarts and sugar cookies after I moved away from home, and last year my sister and I got together to make some cookies.  This year, we'll be doing some extra baking to give to friends, and batches for just the two of us, using gluten-free ingredients.  First up, butter tarts!  I always end up making these a few times between now and Christmas, since they go so fast!  They are my favorite, afterall...  :)

    What's your favorite Christmas treat?

  • Favorite Christmas Treat?? Hmmm, I do like butter tarts, but we never made them often, I also like ginger snaps and these Merry Berry cookies my mom makes. We make all the dough and pre-roll a cookie roll, wrapping it in wax paper then just pull it out, cut and bake when you want a batch. I think those cookies have marishino cherries, vanilla, cinnamon, coconut, and a nut or two? i'd have to pull out the recipe. But they are actually super yummy!

Nothing beats a French Canadian tortiere though. But it's a meal thing, baked in a pie crust. Really good and usually only made during the holidays/

  • I'm in Cambridge not far from Toronto and we have had some flurries but nothing has stuck. I'm jealous of you ladies.

My favorite treat nanimo bars...hmmmmm :)

I love to bake but haven't started yet. Not sure if I will get an opportunity to but if the time presents itself shortbread will be on the list.
