Hi all, I wanted to update you on what's been going on..got MH's SA results..they are not as good as we hoped..I don't have the exact numbers yet but here's the gist:
Total: 8.5 million (they want 20)
Of those 8.5 million, only 5% are "normal"..DR said we could def get pregnant with these numbers, but wants to move ahead with an IUI. MH is pretty upset about it..I feel terrible. I haven't done an HSG or anything, should I do that before considering an IUI? Anyone know the success rate of an IUI? Not sure what we will do..thanks for your advice!
P.S. Love the turtles!!!
Re: Silver Lining? At least we have some answers..
Yes, I would definitely do an HSG before doing IUI. No use doing an IUI if your tubes are blocked.
While those numbers aren't ideal, it is possible with IUI. Don't lose hope! I would ask if he rec. you being on clomid or injectables only because with fewer sperm sometimes it helps to have more then one target.
Best of luck!
TTC since March/April 2010
DX: MFI - less than 1 million sperm, 26% motility
DH put on anastrozole to increase counts
June/July 2011 100 mg Clomid + TS IUI#1 & IUI 2 - BFN :-(
Forced break due to DH getting spinal surgery in August 2011
IVF - January 2012: BFN
FET in April 2012 - BFP at 6dp5dt! Beta #1 at 9dp5dt: 82.5, Beta #2 at 12dp5dt: 352 Beta #3 at 19dp5dt: 6000, saw heartbeat and one little bean at 5W6D!
After nearly 3 years of waiting our LO was born December 18th 2012!
Personally, I wouldn't do an IUI unless it's covered by insurance because the success rate wouldn't be very good (still possible though!)
I would consult a MFI urologist before deciding anything. He'd be able to give you the best recommendations as far as if there's anything you can do to improve the numbers and how to proceed.
Good luck!
Thank you for your advice. My OB says the procedure only runs $150, that seems really affordable to us. We haven't met with the people who would do the procedure yet, but we are still throwing around ideas..whether we meet with a urologist and give it 6 months naturally, or we move right into an IUI. The success rate is crazy low, and disappointing..ugh!
Dealing with MFI, good count, good motility, 3% morph-HSG all clear, all other test results came back normal, IUI is our next step
May 2012- Clomid 50mg + IUI = BFN
June- Cycle Break
July- Forced cycle break due to cysts
August- Femara, Trigger, IUI#2= ?
I agree, especially with the bolded part!
Severe MFI. Me: supposedly all clear but eggs showed vacuoles.
IVF #1 January 2012, ER Jan 14th: 34R, 27M, 23F. Day 3: 18 embies still strong. Day 5: zero "good," one "fair," the rest "poor." Transferred 3. None made it to blast or to freeze. Jan 28: BFN.
Lucky IVF #2: Transferred two beautiful day three embies on St. Patrick's Day. BFP on HPT 7dp3dt. Beta 1 (14dpER)=106; Beta 2 (16dpER)=140; Beta 3 (19dpER)=264! First u/s 4.17.

I agree with both of the pp. And I suggest seeing an RE after having your HSG done. An RE can provide a specialized treatment plan for you and give you a better idea of what the success rate would be. The general rule is 10 million for IUIs. Less than that, it's pretty unlikely, but not impossible for it to work. Good luck with whatever you decide.
Ovarian cancer survivor
DH= low motility
2/9/11 lap & hysteroscopy- uterine polyp & scar tissue removed
3/25/11 IUI#1= BFP m/c; D&C at 7w3d (Trisomy 16)
IUIs #2, #3, #4 and #5= BFNs
Onto IVF #1= BFN
FET 4/6/12= 2 extended blasts transferred, with one hatching
Beta 1= 607; Beta 2= 1,564; Beta 3= 24,439; Beta 4= over 64,000
First u/s on 5/10= TWINS! Heartbeats 158 and 160!
It's a boy and a girl!

((HUGS)) At least you have some answers. I would definitely move forward with an HSG before an IUI to make sure your tubes aren't blocked. Also, has DH seen a urologist yet? They can sometimes prescribe Clomid, or other remedies to help increase his count.
It is possible to get pg with those numbers though. We got pg with a 5 mil count with an IUI. Good luck! You'll be in my T&P!
