Hypnobirthing?

I'm 32 weeks along and planning on delivering my son at my local birth center with my midwife. I particularly plan for a water birth, if that is what is most comfortable for me when the time comes. I have been looking into childbirth classes, and aside from a class in the Birthing From Within style, I would also like to take a course in hypnobirthing. I've watched a lot of videos of hypnobirthing mothers, and it seems to be a fairly effective method of pain management. Has anyone here used hypnobirthing, and what was your experience with it?

Also, does anyone have any other recommendations as far as childbirth classes/books?

Thanks!

Re: Hypnobirthing?

  • DH and I took the hypnobirthing class (ours came with the hypnobirthing CD, a book, and a bunch of scripts), and I really enjoyed it. I think it helped me a lot not only when I was in labor, but when I was pregnant. I'm normally a high-strung person, and listening to the affirmations every night, practicing my breath, and having DH read the scripts to me really helped me relax, and work through those difficult contractions. As far as extra reading, I would recommend Ina May's Guide to Childbirth.

    HTH!

  • I really loved my hypnobirthing class. You might not have enough time to take the entire course before your due date. As far as books I loved the Ina May Gaskin books and The Birth Book.

  • Thanks for your reply! I can definitely relate to the high-strung thing, I  get so stressed out so easily and I was hoping that the techniques would help me out with life in general as well as childbirth.
  • The course I'm looking into is a month long course with 5 meetings. It runs from december 1st til the 29th. He could come that early but since this is my first baby, I'm not really counting on him coming so early, though it could happen. I hope he doesn't come too early!

Is The Birth Book by Ina May Gaskin as well?

Thank you for your recommendations =)

  • I did hypnobirthing and a waterbirth and it was amazing. I never took the classes though, I just read and followed the book and did the affirmations by myself. I also made sure to listen to the CD every day. The most helpful part to me was the breathing exercises. I hardly felt anything until the last half hour before ds was born.
  • Definitely look into it ASAP!  My birth story is a few posts above this.
