Babies: 0 - 3 Months

My baby's not pooping!

LO is 2 weeks old and she is only pooping every few days. We're going on 4 days now. I BF her and began supplementing this week bc she wasn't gaining weight and bc of the not pooping. She pees a lot. Her weight check went great today so the supplementing is working. What's the deal with the poop?! Anyone else had this experience?

Re: My baby's not pooping!

  • I worried about this with my LO in the past, and when I took her to the pedi, they told me not to worry! As dumb as it sounds, give her a few more days, and pay attention to the BM. If it's soft, it's okay! If it's hard pellets, call your Pedi.

Otherwise, another suggestion my pedi gave me was to give my LO 1-2oz of prune juice a day (as needed). Obviously not something you'd want to give all the time. But I give my LO apple/prune juice by Gerber that I find in the baby section at Wal*mart, and it helps her go to the bathroom for sure!

  • Thank you! Is 2 weeks too young to do prune juice? What age did yours first drink it?

  • My LO was 3 weeks old. I doubt that 1 week really makes a difference. Your LO might not even like it.. it doesn't taste that great! lol. But give it a try.

  • We just started the same thing.  Waas pooping fine up until yesterday...went 24 hours without a BM so i called the pedi...of course an hour after I left the nurse a message he pooped and has done so three times since...all loose and sorta runny.

Nurse said not to worry but man does he seem uncomfortable.  Lastnight was awful, grunting, fussy, wouldnt go to sleep...and tonight seems like its going to go the same way.

  • DS only poops about every 5 days. His pedi said this is fine, as long as it is soft and not hard. He also said you can lightly massage the stomach where the bowls are to help out a little.

  • AMAZING TIP FROM MY PEDI!!!! my son has a sensitive belly he had to be switched to soy at 2 weeks old.. (Enfamil PROSOBEE soy for sensitive tummy) if you dont do the formula or shes on soy then give her 1/4tsp of MILK OF MAGNESIA per 8oz bottle whether its breastmilk or formula. IT WORKS MIRACLES i havent had a problem since and when she first begins to poop again, move her legs in bicycle motion then when she begins to push, grab her ankles and lightly press them into her belly then release. It works great and is PERFECTLY SAFE!!! my son is 2 months and a week old now so im still using it on him when he has trouble. now hes pooping everyday sometimes i have to give him M.O.M. but it straighten his BM out for the most part!!! Ask your PEDI first if you want but this info came from mine and says theres no risks!
  • I would do the thermometer trick first before prune juice. Or a baby suppository or adult one cut up so it's tiny.

  • It's normal for babies (especially BF) to go days with out pooping. As long as she isn't straining and uncomfortable she should be fine. You can try biking her legs and a belly massage, if she needs to go that'll help.
