First off, this poll is in no way intended to criticize those October moms who are letting their LO's suck their thumbs! I was a thumb sucker and didn't break the habit until I entered junior high. My teeth suffered big time! My mom always gave me the guilt trip but I just couldn't stop. I only did it in front of my family and at the time I thought I was the only girl in the world still sucking her thumb, but from reading through posts it seems a lot of us did it into elementary school. So just out of curiosity, at what age did you stop sucking your thumb? Or if not you, your DH?[Poll]
Re: NBR Moms who were thumb-suckers
I think I was 11ish. DH was probably around the same age. I think he eventually stopped out of embarrassment. I had one of these, which basically prevented you from getting your thumb in there:
And I had the whole gamut of thumbsucking effects - overbite, ridiculously high roof of mouth, crossbite, and open bite.
- Although my mouth was too small for my teeth so I probably would have had to have braces even if I didn't suck my thumb
I had one of those, too. But I figured out a way to suck my thumb around it.
So not good. My mom tried putting stuff on my thumb that tasted awful, tried making deals with me for what I would get if I quit, etc. Nothing worked.
