DH was watching DD sleep her first night in the hospital and when she started choking. Her body went into a fit and it looked like she was having a seizure. We turned her over, pat her on the back, clumsily used the aspirator on her and called the nurse.
It truly frightened us. I never felt so much fear in my life and at that moment I wondered if would be able to do this whole motherhood thing knowing how much the thought of losing her terrified me. ...I digress.
So it turned out she had a very large BM and spit up the fluid which caused her body to go into a little shock. Nurses said it was completely normal, but I wanted them to keep her in the nursery so they could watch her because I was so scared it would happen again on our watch. That evening it happened a couple more times, but she was okay.
Last night (DD is now 2 and a half weeks old) she spit up and it came out her nose or went up her nose and she freaked out again, doing the seizing thing. DH was changing her (why this always happens to him I don't know) and he was able to again turn her over, pat her back and clear out her nose and mouth with the aspirator.
My fear is that this
will happen while we aren't looking or while we're asleep. Do babies
commonly spit up in their sleep and choke on it? MIL and my mother
don't seem to be phased by this, but it bothers me so much because of
that initial night.
Re: Choking on spit up? Repost from November
my dd coughs on her spit up occasionally.. it can be a little scary, but always is fine.
if shes not already, consider room sharing if you are worried. LO sleeps in her pnp by our bed--- you will wake up if you hear her coughing trust me
"What did my fingers do before they held you? What did my heart do with it's love?"
My DD did the same thing she would projectile and often choke on her vomit at night. Turns out it was mostly due to reflux. I know how you feel I could never sleep at night from worry.
We now elevate the mattress, use special formula and add a tsp of rice cereal to her bottle occasionally to minimize the vomiting. Also laying baby flat on their back (such as when changing them) can aggravate these symptoms causing spit up to come back up.
I also elevate her head on a pillow during changing and have not had the choking since. Shes also getting a bit older which appears to be helping. I would try some of these techniques but of course call your pedi first and discuss your options.
Best of luck and hugs! I know this can be stressful!

My LO started spitting up and choking in her sleep too...It scares me. The dr told me it's because she has reflux so I have to burp her and keep her sitting up for 20-30 mins after she eats. I do this but for the past two days she keeps spitting milk up in her sleep about 1 to 2 hrs later. I bought a small sturdy travel bed and she sleeps with us. (it's one of those beds that you put in your bed so no one rolls over on the baby.)
Have you told the Dr that this has happened again?
