Trouble TTC

Do you ever talk to people in the waiting room?

At my RE, there are 3 waiting rooms:  the main waiting room, the one where you wait before RE consults, and another where you wait for u/s.  One Saturday I was waiting for an u/s with 2 other ladies and we all started talking.  It was so nice.  We laughed about looking like junkies from b/w, which ladies downstairs you want for b/w, and just the concept of being there so early on a Saturday.  I found it refreshing.  As I sat there waiting for my u/s in silence this morning with 3 other ladies that were all avoiding eye contact I just wondered why.  Why are we all so ashamed to be there?  We're all in the same boat, right?  I'm not saying it should be social hour but I find the whole thing to be odd.  I saw the same chick today that was waiting with me on Wednesday and I almost said something but she made it clear she was not interested in conversation.

I know I'm a big mouth who can talk to anyone but come on!  Is your RE office the same way?  Am I weird for even thinking about this?

Re: Do you ever talk to people in the waiting room?

  • The last time I was at my RE's on a Saturday, in a packed but silent waiting room, out comes this couple with twin babies... I wondered how much my RE had to pay them to give us all hope!  (I guess some women might've been upset by that, but I thought it was a vote of confidence)

I agree with you that women are all sitting there judging themselves for no apparent reason.

  • We only have one waiting room, but it is for an RE office, so we are all there for the same reason. It is pretty quiet at mine, although I did get chatting to one other person about the IVF process when I was doing IUIs once. A lot of husbands/SOs tend to go with their women at mine too, so it's usually them talking quietly to each other. I usually bring a book because my DH works nights and is usually sleeping when I need to be there.

  • I understand the silence in the main waiting room but in the smaller ones there are rarely DHs/SOs.  I guess in the beginning I was more shy about it there but now that I'm there 3-4 times per week (at times) I'm feeling a little more comfortable.

  • I would definitely chat with someone, but everyone is usually pretty quiet.  My Re's office isn't usually very busy either.  I always try to at least say hello to other women there!

Waiting rooms are generally uncomfortable :/

I understand.  I'm one of the people who smiles and says "Hi" to everyone.  It's so odd because I used to be really shy when I was a kid.

  • I've never had a conversation with anyone in the waiting room other than my husband. I agree, it's sad. But I don't really feel comfortable starting the conversation either. Our center does have a support group, so I guess that's the time and place to share with others.

  • I always wish I was brave enough to talk to people.  Mine is as close to silent as you could get.  It is always so akward, people looking all red and embarassed, people looking at their shoes trying to avoid eye contact.  I think talking would be nice, probably ease a lot of the tension.  Good for you for making the first step!

  • The last few times I have been there, I was the only person in the waiting room.  But when I went for my very first u/s, it was at 7am on a Sunday.  It was me and one other girl.  Then a guy walked in by himself.  The other girl and I looked at each other and both kinda giggled cause you totally know what the guy is there for.  It was silly, but it broke the ice and we started chatting.  :-)

  • My RE's office is a separate office building not connected to any other doctors, except those in the practice who are all RE's.

I feel like when I go everyone does the sympathetic look around since we all know we're there for similiar reasons but I've never struck up conversations with any other patients...

  • It's similar at my clinic.  Everyone is pretty quiet and I think it's sad that we all can't band together.  If there were any place that we could feel a little less alone, I would think the waiting room at the RE would be the place.

That being said, I have never gone out of my way to talk to anyone of the women there.  The only time I've ever chatted with another woman was when she complemented me on having cute shoes.  We really didn't talk about IF and I feel like it was the elephant in the room.

After this post, I think I'm going to try reach out more and talk to the other women at the RE.  Yup, it's definitely going to be a goal of mine now. :)

  • Our clinic is quiet, but all of the employees are great..they always make conversation. ..I don't think that its that people are ashamed about heightened but it seems like a lot of people are more private then others, me on the other hand I can talk to anyone about it because it only does it make me feel better, but if I can help someone along the way that's even better!

I agree with you!  I am a chatty person and would love to talk to others in the office, but for the most part there is dead silence in the waiting rooms at my REs office (there are 3 also).  Recently, I was in the waiting room at a hospital for three hours when my husband had his tonsils out.  I got talking to a women, and it turns out that her daughter had just delivered twins after several IVFs with the same RE as me.  The story was so inspirational, and I thought, I wish women at my REs office would be more supportive / friendly towards one another.  I came to the conclusion that usually the waits are short at the REs office so maybe that's why no one really dives into conversation?!

  • I was thinking about this this morning. My appointment was super early and there were a couple of other women in the waiting room. We were all anxious, and they were running late. I made a little joke to lighten the mood which one woman seemed to appreciate while the other buried her face in a magazine. It would be so much easier to just chat I think. I know every time I'm there, I'm so tense in the waiting room. It would certainly go by faster if everyone were a little more chatty.
