Moms of Lo's with Celiac

What were your child's symptoms?  DS has been having vomiting and severe stomach pain on and off for months (since Feb.)  He goes between constipation and bouts of diarreha.  A couple of times his stool was really pale (sorry TMI). He just had a problem (intussusception) with his intestines and the doctors thought the symptoms would go away since they fixed the problem.  Symptoms are still here. He is also allergic to eggs, soy, and peanuts.  He has eczema and GERD.  He was evalaueted for seizures but they never saw anything on EEG.  We had a blood test done for CEleiac but wanted to know others experience.

Re: Moms of Lo's with Celiac

  • DD2 had lots of gi issues (reflux, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, gas).  She also was FTT --was losing weight and anemic.  Some little things that I didn't realize were related -- rashes, insomnia, extreme picky eating, moodiness.

With DD3 we caught it early because we knew what to watch for.  Her main symptoms were gas, diarrhea, and insomnia.

  • Our daughter was moody and hated eating. She was severely constipated and had chunks of fleshy stuff in stools. She was failure to thrive as a baby and eating solids I gave her super high cal foods etc just to get her to be underweight. Her blood test was negative at 1yr old...then at 18 months it was in the neither positive or negative range. But the biopsy showed severe damage.

  • In hindsight - the first signs were that DS was tired a lot and sleeping a lot.  The full rash of symptoms hit in May of last year, but we had gone on vacation in early April to Mexico.  He didn't want to go on the beach, he took 2 naps a day, and just was a little "off".  At the time, we didn't realize it,but like I said - hindsight put that trip into a different perspective.

End of April through May - he threw up a lot, had diarreha, and had NO energy, and also lost weight.

It was through these symptoms and his bloodwork that the doc felt it was celiac.  We immediately took him off gluten and w/in 3 days, noticed a difference.  With all this "evidence", when we finally saw the GI the following week, he didn't feel there was a need for a biopsy.  We will get one someday, but not while he's so young.   There is just NO question what the issue is.  Since then, he ate a couple bites of a waffle once at DC and w/in 3 hours, he threw up and then slept for 3 hours.   Again, just very clear to us that gluten is the issue.

  • I don't have an LO with it, though I have it and I have the genes for it, so it's possible that my LO may have it, something to definitely look out for!  My symptoms when I was little were IBS, GERD, restless legs, TMJ, exhaustion, super thin, got sick easily, was bookish because I never had the energy to go out and play.  As I got older the symptoms got worse, adding brain fog and severe aches and pains.  I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia because it answered the cause of all my symptoms.  At the age of 23 I was diagnosed with a wheat allergy and since then, through elimination diets, have gotten rid of all gluten grains.  For me, elimination diets were the key to figuring it all out.  All my celiac blood tests came back negative and I wasn't willing to go back on gluten in order to get the biopsy!  However, two of my siblings and my mother have similar problems with gluten, though we each have our own set of symptoms.  It's a funny disease, that's for sure.  I highly recommend finding a nutritionist/doctor who's familiar with celiac and gluten sensitivites (not the same thing), and try an elimination diet.  If it's not gluten, you may find something else through the diet.  Good luck and I hope your LO feels better!

  • Lilygrace- I had a friend w/ a very similar experience.  No tests came back positive - and I want to say she even got a biopsy, and nothing (so not celiac).  But once she started cutting out wheat and gluten, she noticed a difference.

  • Hi... I don't usually post here, just lurk... my DS has Celiac, as do I, my mother, my 3 sisters, brother and niece. We all have VERY different symptoms, but i can tell you what DS experiences... Nausea within minutes of eating the offensive food, alternating between diarrhea and severe constipation, extreme bloating, eczema, and stunted growth (he is in 2t clothes... and is almost 4). He is the worlds pickiest eater (thrived on pepperoni and cheese for about 6 months at one point) because he is afraid of being sick. He has been GF for almost 2 years now, and the difference is amazing! Good luck to you and your LO! Smile

  • While I was not the OPer.  This helped a lot.  After 2 years of chronic constipation, I took my oldest DD to a pediatric gastroentrerologist yesterday.  Based on her symptoms of refusing food, itchiness, chronic constipation, etc, her suspects Celiac Disease.  We are holding off on testing until we get the constipation under control, but after thinking about it more, I may push for testing.

  • Definitely push for testing, we were unable to get the constipation under control until DD was gluten-free and you don't want to do that until you've had the testing (or you won't have accurate results).  Good Luck!
