Parenting after a Loss

Newborn acne/facial rash question

DS has a nasty case of what I've understood to be "newborn acne" for over a week. On both cheeks, up till yesterday the rash looked like little pink pinpoints and a few tiny pustules, and if he laid on a cheek it'd get red, with the redness going away once the pressure/warmth was removed. There are lesser bits of rash on his neck and scalp. Starting yesterday afternoon, both cheeks have turned blotchy pink and range from pink to red pretty much all the time, and his wee little chin is now also involved.

Query for you all: is there anything that could or should be applied or done to help alleviate this? I cleanse his face every morning and evening with plain water and I have left these areas alone until now.

Thanks for any ideas or experience you can share.

Re: Newborn acne/facial rash question

  • I'd try only cleaning once a day, and only with water.

Some say breastmilk helps. I never tried that. M's went away by 6 or 7 weeks.

  • Good question I'm going through the same thing with my LO :( I hate seeing him like that I feel so bad but it doesn't seem to bother him.  I read the other day that putting breast milk on it can help, I've tried this a couples times now, no change.

  • DD has the same thing. Started at 3 weeks and is just starting to clear up. All I did was use water twice a day.

It bothered me more than her.

I'm with you on it bothering me more than him. It just looks uncomfortable. :(

  • Winter had the same thing, I think it was acne and later eczema. I stopped eating dairy last Sat., so almost a week, and her skin has completely cleared up in the last few days. I don't know if it's related to the dairy allergy but at the same time those problems cleared up so has the persistent diaper rash she had.

  • DS had bad baby acne starting at around 5 weeks.  It was like his early teenage years!  I didn't do anything as per the pedi and it just went away on its own (though it took a few weeks).

  • Kellen's just looked like acne in the beginning, but then it became patchy and more red.  It was all over her neck, chin, face, and even her earlobes.  I asked our Pedi about at her 2m appt, bc I was concerned with eczema since I have it.  Pedi said it was acne with the beginnings of eczema.  She said to apply 1% hydrocortisone cream and Vanicream.  It cleared up within a couple days once we did.

  • My DD's acne & flaky skin went away on its own after a few weeks.  My understanding is that they get the acne as a result of your hormones leaving their bodies, so I don't know if there's anything you can even do for that.  If it starts looking more dry & flaky like eczema, though, you may want to shoot a call to your pedi's office (the nurse may be able to give you suggestions over the phone).

    Hope it clears up soon!
