Multiples

c-section vs. vaginal?

Just wondering how many of you did or are opting to have a c-section over vaginal with your multiples?  I'm very scared of surgery and the recovery, but part of me just wants to say that no matter what I want to do a c-section because I'm even more worried to do a vaginal and then there be complications or pushing out A and then STILL needing a c sec or B.  I do not want to recover in two places at all.

Any advice or what are your thoughts?

Re: c-section vs. vaginal?

  • I had the same thoughts and fears, but didn't have the option - my OB would only do a section if one of the babies was breech.  He was even willing to try a breech extraction of B if I wanted (I did not want that!).  Ultimately, B was breech so I had the c-section and I have to say recovery was super easy.  I realize this is not the case for everyone, but for me I felt crappy for like 3 days and then had to keep reminding myself to take it easy even if I felt fine.

Will your doc let you choose an unnecessary section?  I would talk it over with him and check with your insurance too.  Some insurance wont cover elective c-sections!

  • I really wanted a vaginal and even thought the "double whammy" I think most MoM's call it can happen it's not a common occurence, but I knew this could potentially happen.

With that said, my OB didn't even discuss the prospect of a c-section- my boys were also both head down so we were trying for a vaginal birth, unless we ran into complications while trying to give birth I was in the OR and would be ready for c-section.

I had a very good vaginal birth for both (they did use forceps) I did have an epeisotimy (sp?), but recovery was fine and because this was first birthing experience I thought it was good :)

I'm glad to hear you had a good experiance w/ it! :)  My doc did say that i can do a c-section electively even if it ends up not being a neccesity.  I'll have to double check w. my insurance though like you said...good thinking!

  • I chose a c-section for the very reasons you listed above.

It was very easy and the recovery was quick.  I was off all pain meds by the time I was discharged.

Both my babies were head down the day of delivery and part of me wishes I would have at least tried, but they're here and healthy and that's all that matters!

I had prior abd surgeries, so that played in to opting for a section as well.

Its a very personal decision and a difficult one at that!  Either way, it will be an amazing day :)

  • I had a great labour and delivery and delivered my twins at 38w vaginally. I ended up needing to be induced because the girls refused to come on their own. My OB was very experienced with twin births (and even had twins herself) so she was comfortable doing a breech extraction, if need be. Fortunately, both babies were head down and I was able to push them both out in a little under 1 hour.

  • I was originally scheduled for a c/s, but Baby B flipped, so I was able to do a vaginal delivery.  If you have the option, I would (personally) recommend doing a vaginal.  Even though I had a 2nd degree tear, and lost a good amount of blood, I would still do it over in a heartbeat.  The recovery wasn't bad at all...
  • I had same fears and thoughts and didn't know what to do.

In the end, I had no choice.  Water broke middle of night at 33 weeks and had emergency c-section.

If I had a choice, I think I would have tried for vaginal if both babies were head down at time of delivery.

  • I didn't have a choice to try a vaginal delivery so I had a c-section.  Even though I was nervous about attempting a vag delivery, I probably would have tried if both were head down.  It's definitely a choice between what you and your Dr. feel comfortable with.
  • My answer my not be the popular one but, I wanted an elective section with Emerson but, was guilted out of it.  I ended up having an  emergency section with her and a repeat section with the babies.

I am going to tell you to go with your gut.  Do what you feel is right for you...especially with a multiples pregnancy.

My recoveries with both sections were easy for me.  My doctor strait up told me that I could be cut low down on the tummy by the pubic bone or down there.  After that comment, it was a no brainer for me.  I wanted a section.

Again, go with your gut.  You know what's best for you.

  • my doctor was willing to do either a csection or vaginal.  both boys have been head down almost the whole pregnancy, so i was thinking of trying for vaginal - i asked the doctor for her reco and she said in my case we should try for vaginal.
  • I'm hoping for a vaginal birth. As long as baby A is head down, my OB will give it a try. I may even do acupuncture later in the pregnancy to help with their positions.

  • I've been open to either option all along. There are aspects of both that scare me and aspects of both that appeal. So I figured we would just go with whichever option was dictated by circumstance. My doctor only requires Baby A to be head down for vaginal delivery, but as it turns out they've both been breech with no change sice at least 32 weeks. Baby A has always been wedged very low in my pelvis so the doctor figured the chances of a change in position were very slim. I'm scheduled for a c section in 3 days at 38w2d and as of yesterday they were both still breech.

I would just go with what circumstance dictates if you can't decide. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself either way. Twin pregnancies can be so unpredictable. Hope things go well for you!

This, 10000%. Around 25 weeks or so, I started getting this feeling that the risks of a vaginal outweighed the benefits and that I wanted a c-section. I asked my doctor who said we'd see how things were going and the position of the babies. Baby A was head down until around 28 weeks, at which point he turned breech and stayed that way, which made the decision for us. Baby B was always breech/transverse.

My c-section was a very easy, low-key experience. Walk into the hospital with hair and makeup done, have 2 babies a few hours later. I had a very, very good experience with no complications. I was very lucky. I was scared sh!tless of surgery but I was fortunate to have a good experience. If we have #3 I will most likely have a repeat scheduled c-section.

  • I went with vaginal,  the recovery was awful cause I tore really bad.  If I had the chance to do it all over again I would have opted for the c-section.

  • Both of my singletons were delivered via c/s, so this pg was going to end in a c/s anyways - the only difference is that there will be two babies delivered instead of one.  Honestly, I was relieved that my delivery option had been already decided (by my previous c/s) when I discovered it was twins - one less thing to worry about. Now I just need to make it to my scheduled c/s!  Plus I am planning on getting my tubes tied while on the table, so it just works out.

I can't really give any advice on this except to talk with your doc about your options and then decide what is going to be best for you.

  • I was all scared of a c-section, but I ended up needing one (A breech, B vertex) so that was what we did.  And it was a piece of cake!  Not fun, by any means, but easy recovery.  Everyone told me to get up and move after and I believe that makes all the difference.  If you need one just move as much as you can after!

  • I had a c/s... I guess it was by choice but it was what my MFM and OB recommended. I had my babies a little early after their estimated weights got too far apart. My Baby B was estimated 2 lbs bigger than Baby A and Baby A was estimated to be IUGR. He did end up being SGA but the discordance only ended up being 1lb 2oz. I was starting to dilate and both babies were vertex so I was favorable for an induction in those respects but they said that the risks of a vaginal were much greater because Baby B was supposed to be so much bigger. Once A was out, I would have all the regular risks for B plus since he was so much bigger, it would take longer than normal for him to come out after A. During this time, since one baby was out and the cord was cut, the placenta(s) (they were fused) could start to separate from the uterus creating a dangerous situation for B. They said if I was dead set on trying vaginal they would let me but to be prepared for the very strong possibility that I would end up with both and it was their recommendation to have a c/s because it would be safer for the babies. I chose to go with their recommendations.

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  • I was really hoping for a vaginal delivery since (barring complications), I was hoping for the health benefits of a vaginal delivery for both babies and mom. Of course you'll hear horror stories on both sides but don't let those sway you; I would do the research and also listen to your gut. Personally I was really happy that vaginal worked out for us. Baby B did flip during labor so I had to have a breech extraction but still, it worked out well and I just really didn't want to have major surgery unless there was a medical reason.

  • I had the same thoughts and fears you did, and was very tempted to just go for an elected section. I was induced at 36w6d due to borderline pre-e. After 27+ hours of labor, my epi failed and I was in agonizing pain. I didn't think I could take any more. I was fully dilated but they topped off my epi in hopes I'd be able to push through the pain. At that point my BP dropped dangerously low (70/40) and I was rushed to the OR. It was the most terrifying thing I've ever experienced. Looking back, I wish I would have just gone for an elected section. Bottom line, go with your gut!!
